In this role, you'll:
Working within our Engineering & Maintenance Team at Sydney Trains, the primary purpose of our Bridge Examiner will be conducting detailed examination of bridges, culverts and all other structures in conjunction with current standards and technical maintenance plan within a defined territory. You will be identifying defects and make recommendations for defect removal/ management.
Step into a hands-on role where your technical expertise directly contributes to the safety, strength, and reliability of NSW’s metropolitan rail network. You’ll play a vital part in keeping our infrastructure running smoothly - every day, for every journey.
You’ll be on the frontline of structural asset maintenance, taking responsibility for inspecting and certifying structures to meet Technical Maintenance Plan requirements. Your role will involve completing inspections to identifying defects and issues in assets, assessing their risk, and taking timely action where needed. You’ll log your findings in the Bridge Management System and prepare detailed reports to support informed decision-making.
As a key technical resource for the team, you’ll provide practical advice on the ground, contributing to their development and maintaining a strong focus on safety. You’ll lead site-specific safety planning, including managing contractor inductions, and ensure all work is carried out with full compliance to safety procedures. From time to time, you'll also be on-call outside regular hours to respond to emergency or planned works requiring specialist structural knowledge. Collaboration is central to your role, you’ll work closely with engineers, coordinators, and managers to identify risks, resolve issues, and help maintain the integrity of our network every day.
This is a site-based role located in Sydenham, requiring shift work with 2 weekends a month some nights and possibly public holidays. The position may also involve travel across the wider rail network as operational needs arise.

About you
You’re a self-motivated person who thrives outdoors, solving real-world problems and making infrastructure safer. With strong technical skills, practical experience, and a commitment to safety and quality, you stay calm under pressure and adapt easily when priorities shift.
You hold relevant trade qualifications or experience in metalwork, construction, or structural work. You’re already competent, or able to become competent within 6 months, in TLIB3098A and TLIB3087A for Examining Concrete Masonry Structures, and Examining Timber, or ES64 detailed structures examination. You’re also trained (or willing to train) in confined spaces, elevated work platforms, and hold or can obtain an Electrical Permit.
You meet all required Safe Work qualifications, including Rail Safety Worker Category 1 medical clearance. You also hold a current NSW Class C driver’s licence and are confident driving a 4WD or Ute across diverse conditions.
Your experience includes bridge inspections, structural maintenance, component renewal, and culvert work. You understand safety compliance and risk in complex environments and bring strong problem-solving skills to identify and implement practical improvements.
You’re confident with digital tools, able to prepare clear reports, and use bridge management systems, mobile technology, and email to stay connected and informed.
