What you will be doing
The Claims Benefit Specialist Victoria is responsible for the accurate calculation of Pre-Injury Average Weekly Earnings (PIAWE) to support weekly compensation payments for injured team members. This involves detailed analysis of pre-injury earnings and ensuring all assessments comply with relevant state legislation, regulations and guidelines and conducting peer reviews and quality assurance and ownership of complex benefits activities.
The Claims Benefit Specialist works closely with Eligibility Case Managers to provide timely and compliant compensation calculations that support efficient and fair claims management. The Claims Benefit Specialist also takes ownership of indexation, superannuation reviews, step-downs and reductions in weekly benefits and ongoing quality assurance and legislative compliance.
Responsibilities and duties:
Claims Management
- Liaise with payroll to obtain and verify earnings data to ensure accuracy in calculations.
- Conduct detailed analysis of pre-injury earnings using payroll records.
- Accurately calculate PIAWE in line with relevant state workers’ compensation legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure timely delivery of compensation calculations to support smooth claims processing.
- Maintain accurate documentation of all calculations, methodologies and supporting evidence for audit purposes.
Identity and escalate complex cases that may impact claim decisions.

Customer Service
- Respond promptly and professionally to queries from stakeholders, ensuring high-quality customer service.
- Deliver a high standard of service that promotes trust and transparency.
Support the Eligibility Case Manager in managing stakeholder expectation by providing clear timeframes and updates.

Risk and Compliance
- Ensure all calculations are performed in accordance with the applicable state legislation, regulatory guidelines and internal procedures.
- Keep up to date with changes in workers’ compensation laws and how they impact PIAWE calculations.
- Identify and report potential risks, discrepancies, or noncompliance within wage data or documentation.
Contribute to internal audits and process reviews by providing clear records and justifications for calculations.

- Collaborate closely with Eligibility Case Managers and other key stakeholders to ensure coordinated claims handling.
Participate actively in team meetings, training, and continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency and accuracy.

The skills you’ll be doing
To be successful in this role you should have:
Education:
A qualification or certification in a Business, Finance or related field (desirable).
Required Skills and Experience:
- Analytical and detail orientated.
- Effective organization and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet timeframes.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret payroll data.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in both documentation and calculations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience in workers compensation, insurance, payroll or related field
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in calculating Pre-Injury Average Weekly Earnings (PIAWE) in Victoria and Weekly Compensation rates in line with relevant legislation and guidelines.
- High attention to detail with proven ability to complete complex numerical calculations accurately and efficiently.
