Downer Professional Services comprises of three business units our Technical, Advisory, and Capability consulting practice, and Team Downer , which partners with CASG and NSSG as a major service provider to Defence . Together, we are a multi-disciplinary advisory and delivery partner of choice for clients across Defence and National Security.
We currently have an opportunity for a Systems Safety Engineer in Canberra to manage, coordinate, and oversee the CAF16 System Safety Program.
What You’ll Do
This role offers a broad scope, with key role responsibilities including:
- Developing, implementing and maintaining the CAF16 System Safety Program, including System Safety Program Plan (SSPP), hazard analyses and reports, risk logs and controls, Safety Case Reports (SCRs), safety specifications, and safety V&V activities.
- Executing system safety engineering in accordance with Australian legislation, Defence/CASG policies, and recognised best practice standards.
- Providing professional and competent engineering advice on system safety matters to key product stakeholders, including the IC3 SPO Chief Engineer and Executive Authority.
- Providing oversight of contractor system safety programs, including the review of safety deliverables.
- Evaluating engineering changes, and where required, scope, plan and review the implementation of actions from a safety perspective.
Providing systems safety guidance to the CAF16 engineering team, particularly on software-related safety considerations, including applicable hazard analysis techniques, risk assessment, and software assurance activities supporting system design and implementation.

What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor's Degree in Electronic and Communications, Software or Computer Engineering.
- A minimum of five years’ experience as an engineer, with specific experience leading a materiel System Safety Program.
- Member of Engineers Australia, eligible for Chartered Professional Engineering (CPEng) recognition.
- Demonstrated experience leading or managing a materiel System Safety Program.
- Formal training or recognised certification in systems safety.
- Experience in a CASG/Defence program in a system safety role, preferably within sustainment.
Experience working within a technical regulatory or assurance framework (ICTAP/ETAP, LMSM, DASR, CASG EAF, DSwMS).

Due to the nature of the work, you are required to currently hold and maintain a Security clearance as required by the Commonwealth. In some instances, compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements may also be an inherent requirement.
