Full Job Description

Sporting News is seeking a part-time freelance contributing writer to join its Wires Network. This is a high-volume writing position best suited for candidates looking for supplemental work or aspiring journalists looking to gain experience.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in writing AFL stories and understand the players, teams and stories that resonate the most with sports fans in Australia.

You will be tasked with finding your own stories from a multitude of sources, producing and publishing your own content, with the role helping the writer to pick up vital skills, experience and examples of work for their journalism portfolio.

SN’s Wires Network creates feed-friendly informative content tailored for the casual fan:

Can you sell stories with captivating headlines tailored for Google Discover?
Can you identify unique, differentiating angles to major stories?
Can you source ideas from press conferences, podcasts or social feeds?
Can you write quickly, selling a story with concise yet complete copy (300-400 words)?
Can you think like a fan and conjure up engaging team-centric lists to spark debate?

If that sounds like you, we want to talk!

A word to the wise: We aren’t looking for beat writer match reports. We aren’t looking for long-form features or investigative reporting. We aren’t looking for hot takes or commentary. While there’s certainly a home for that type of content, it doesn’t mesh with this specific opportunity.

Your salary will be derived from a baseline fee and CPM model which will be based around the amount of content produced and subsequent page views for that content.

Bear in mind that this role is suited for applicants wanting to gain experience in the industry or looking for additional paid work on top of their current employment.

THE PROJECT:

Curate and write 15-20 stories per week
Write short news articles (250-400 words) related to the biggest trending stories and viral moments of the day
Proactively identify and source stories to write in adherence to SN’s Wires policies
Write and publish stories directly in SN’s CMS
Apply SN’s Google Discover and SEO best practices
Execute link strategy with specific call-to-action copy and placement
