## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Vehicle Body Builder to join our team and contribute to the manufacture, modification, and repair of a diverse range of purpose-built vehicle bodies, including buses, trucks, fire engines, and caravans. This role requires hands-on expertise across a variety of materials and fabrication techniques, with a strong commitment to quality and precision. The ideal candidate brings proven trade experience, a methodical approach to problem-solving, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a broader production team.
## Key Responsibilities
- Construct and assemble framework sections using a range of materials including metal, timber, fibreglass, and reinforced plastics, operating shaping, cutting, and welding equipment to required specifications
- Join framework components by bolting, screwing, riveting, and welding sections together to form complete, structurally sound vehicle body frameworks
- Cut, shape, and fit panels of sheet metal, aluminium, and reinforced plastic to frameworks using both hand and power tools, ensuring accurate alignment and a high-quality finish
- Modify and adapt standard production vehicles to meet custom or special-purpose client requirements, interpreting technical drawings and specifications throughout
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work orders to guide fabrication and assembly tasks accurately
- Conduct quality inspections on completed work, identifying and rectifying defects or non-conformances to ensure all output meets relevant safety and industry standards
- Operate and maintain a range of fabrication machinery and hand tools, ensuring equipment is kept in safe and serviceable condition
- Collaborate with engineers, production supervisors, and other tradespeople to meet project timelines and deliver vehicle builds to specification
- Apply appropriate surface preparation, sealing, and finishing treatments to fabricated components prior to painting or final assembly
- Adhere strictly to workplace health and safety policies, including the correct use of personal protective equipment and safe manual handling practices
- Support continuous improvement initiatives on the workshop floor, contributing ideas to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety outcomes
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Completion of an Australian apprenticeship or equivalent trade qualification in Vehicle Body Building, Panel Beating, or a closely related discipline (Certificate III or above)
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in vehicle body fabrication, modification, or repair within a commercial or production environment
- Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and oxy-acetylene welding techniques across a variety of metals and gauges
- Sound ability to read and interpret technical drawings, engineering blueprints, and work orders
- Competence in operating shaping and cutting machinery as well as a broad range of hand and power tools
- Solid understanding of materials including mild steel, aluminium, fibreglass, and reinforced plastics and their respective fabrication requirements
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering work that meets quality and safety standards
- Current driver's licence (minimum Class C)
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative workshop team
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to maintaining a safe and organised work environment
## Preferred Qualifications
- Trade qualification specifically in Vehicle Body Building (Certificate III in Vehicle Body Building or equivalent)
- Experience working on specialised or purpose-built vehicles such as emergency service vehicles, coaches, or recreational vehicles
- Forklift or elevated work platform (EWP) licence
- White Card (Construction Induction Training) or equivalent WHS certification
- Familiarity with Australian Design Rules (ADRs) relevant to vehicle construction and modification
- Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software or the ability to interpret CAD-generated drawings
- Previous involvement in lean manufacturing, 5S, or other continuous improvement frameworks within a production setting
