Primary objective
The position aims to provide supervised clinical and operative experience in Maxillofacial trauma, Oral Surgery and Head
and Neck Surgery for doctors pursuing a surgical career pathway.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Admit, manage and discharge patients from the service under the supervision of the Maxillofacial/Head and Neck
Surgical Service with the aim of providing the highest possible standards of care.
2. Participate in the treatment of patients requiring facial trauma management, oral surgery, head and neck malignancy
care, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, and management of head and neck infection.
3. Participate in the twenty-four hour on-call roster as required to ensure the proper functioning of the service.
4. Provision of clinical supervision to junior medical staff as required.
5. Take a role in Radiology Review meetings and in planning/scheduling for upcoming surgery.
6. Provide medico-legal and other reports under supervision as appropriate.
7. Participate in research, educational and professional development.
8. Initiate and participate in quality assurance activities, peer review practices and continuing Medical Education.
9. Participate in audit, risk management activities.
10. Participate in other activities related to the Head and Neck service within the Royal Darwin Hospital as directed by the
Maxillofacial/Head and Neck Surgeons including MDT meetings.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care.
3. Demonstrated capability and interest in research.
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels.
5. Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration.
Desirable
1. Prior experience in Maxillofacial surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, ENT, General Surgery or a related Surgical specialty
is desirable.
2. Applications from medical graduates and dual-qualified practitioners are encouraged.
