Where you will be working:

Medical oncology involves using chemotherapy, hormone therapy and other targeted therapy for the treatment of cancer.
The medical oncology service consists of an outpatient service and an in-patient consultation and admission service, with clinics conducted at the Central Coast Cancer Centre at Gosford Hospital and the Cancer Centre at Wyong Hospital.

The department prides itself on its commitment to clinical trials for which it received the NSW Premier’s Award for Outstanding Cancer Research – Innovation in Cancer Clinical Trials, in 2016. In addition, the department remains active in medical education through its affiliation with the University of Newcastle.

Gosford Hospital is the principal referral hospital and trauma centre for the Central Coast, with over 500 inpatient beds and 24/7 access to the emergency department and operating theatres. A recent $368 million dollar redevelopment delivered a new emergency department, ICU, nuclear medicine facility, special care nursery and expanded medical imaging services. Gosford Hospital has a fully servicing medical oncology, radiation oncology and palliative care services, with 3 linear accelerators, chemo unit and clinical trial unit within the Central Coast Cancer Centre.

Wyong Hospital is an acute major metropolitan hospital with over 300 beds providing inpatient, outpatient and emergency services to residents in the northern region of the Central Coast. A recent $200 million expansion delivered a new emergency department, ICU, paediatric unit, inpatient wards, theatres and expanded medical imaging services. In addition, the Wyong Cancer Care Centre is recently renovated and massively expanded completed with staffing and infrastructure.

In conjunction with the University of Newcastle, CCLHD has opened the Central Coast Clinical School and Research Institute on the Gosford Hospital campus, providing additional opportunities in training and research.

What you'll be doing

This role is intended for a final year RACP advanced trainee, preferably in Medical Oncology, or a junior consultant of a relevant RACP Fellowship College or equivalent (during their first 3 years post fellowship) seeking further clinical research experience.
The primary purpose of the position is to provide quality care to patients in a complex clinical environment.
Medical Officers will work under an appropriate level of supervision according to their level of competence to evaluate, diagnose, treat and provide consultation to patients of all ages presenting in any condition and will work in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings.
You may be required to work at the different facilities and locations with the NSW public health system as part of Central Coast Local Health District which includes Gosford, Wyong, Woy Woy and Long Jetty Hospitals.
The Medical Oncology Clinical Trials Fellow will primarily support the Clinical Trial and translational research activities of the Medical Oncology Department for all cancer types. Duties Include the clinical care of patients enrolled on clinical trials, including attending outpatient clinics, completion of clinical trial related tasks such as screening, review of patient eligibility, clinical documentation, assessment of adverse events as per CTCAE, RECIST 1.1/ irRC radiological assessment, liaise with Study Monitors and Medical Monitors, participation In on-call rosters and other clinical services as required by the Director of Medical Oncology. On occasion, the Clinical Trials Fellow may need to attend a clinical trial patient after hours if there is an acute clinical problem for a clinical trial patient. In this case, the trainee will be in direct contact with the Principal Investigator or Medical Oncologist On-call. There will be opportunities for the development of clinical research projects, and preparation of publications.

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category

Completed FRACP Part 1 and Part 2 and a minimum of 2 core years of Advanced Training in Medical Oncology.

Must have previous Medical Oncology Experience of three months or more within the last two years, in a hospital setting within an Australian Hospital or equivalent.

Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, including providing leadership and direction to ensure appropriate management of patients

Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise, with demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.

Demonstrated time management, problem solving skills and excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and computer skills, with minimum of 30 words per minute. Along with evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
