Position Purpose
The Behaviour Support Practitioner is responsible for delivering ethical, evidence-informed and person-centred Positive Behaviour Support to NDIS participants with complex support needs. The practitioner will undertake assessment, formulation, behaviour support planning, therapeutic intervention, stakeholder consultation, implementation support and ongoing review in accordance with the NDIS Positive Behaviour Support Capability Framework, relevant legislation and Canaan Care Services' clinical governance requirements.
The role requires a practitioner who can build safe and respectful therapeutic relationships, translate clinical information into practical strategies, and work collaboratively with participants, families, carers, support teams and allied health professionals.
Key ResponsibilitiesAssessment, formulation and planning
- Complete comprehensive behaviour assessments, including record review, interviews, observations, data analysis, risk assessment and functional behaviour assessment.
- Develop Interim and Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans that are practical, strengths-based, trauma-informed, culturally responsive and consistent with participant goals.
- Identify the function and context of behaviours of concern and develop proactive, skill-building and least-restrictive strategies.
- Review the effectiveness of interventions using measurable outcomes, participant feedback and behavioural data, and revise plans when required.
- Prepare high-quality clinical reports, recommendations, progress summaries and evidence for NDIS plan reviews within required timeframes.
Therapeutic support and capacity building
- Provide individualised therapeutic sessions that build emotional regulation, communication, coping, choice-making, social understanding, independence and self-advocacy.
- Coach families, carers, support workers and other implementers to apply strategies consistently across home, school, work and community settings.
- Develop accessible resources, visual supports and practical tools that reflect the participant's communication style, developmental needs and preferences.
- Support participants and their networks to recognise early warning signs, reduce environmental triggers and strengthen protective factors.
Restrictive practices and safeguarding
- Work actively toward the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices through evidence-based, rights-focused Positive Behaviour Support.
- Identify, document and escalate regulated restrictive practices in accordance with NDIS Commission requirements, Queensland authorisation processes and organisational procedures.
- Ensure behaviour support plans containing regulated restrictive practices meet reporting, consent, authorisation, review and implementation requirements.
- Respond appropriately to incidents, emerging risks, abuse, neglect, exploitation, violence, discrimination and other safeguarding concerns.
Stakeholder collaboration
- Collaborate respectfully with participants, nominees, families, support coordinators, support workers, schools, accommodation providers, health professionals and other relevant stakeholders.
- Facilitate stakeholder meetings, case conferences, implementation reviews and training sessions using clear, non-judgemental and solutions-focused communication.
- Work within professional scope and coordinate with occupational therapists, psychologists, speech pathologists, nurses, medical practitioners and other clinicians when integrated support is required.
Clinical governance and administration
- Maintain accurate, timely and confidential case notes, assessment records, plans, risk documentation, consent records and service data.
- Manage an allocated caseload, schedule appointments, meet report deadlines and communicate promptly when risks or barriers arise.
- Participate in supervision, peer review, audits, team meetings, professional development and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Comply with the NDIS Code of Conduct, Practice Standards, privacy obligations, work health and safety requirements, incident management procedures and all Canaan Care Services policies.
- Use organisational systems responsibly and protect participant information across all work environments.
Essential Selection Criteria
Qualifications: A relevant tertiary qualification in psychology, social work, occupational therapy, counselling, behavioural science, education, disability, nursing or a related discipline.
Practitioner suitability: Current NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner suitability at an appropriate capability level, or demonstrated eligibility and willingness to complete the required suitability process.
Clinical capability: Demonstrated understanding of functional behaviour assessment, Positive Behaviour Support, trauma-informed practice, human rights and person-centred approaches.
Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear clinical reports and engage constructively with diverse stakeholders.
Professional judgement: Ability to assess risk, maintain boundaries, work independently, seek supervision appropriately and make accountable clinical decisions.
Organisation: Ability to manage competing priorities, documentation requirements, travel and time-sensitive participant needs.
Desirable Experience
- Experience supporting children, adolescents or adults with Autism, ADHD, intellectual disability, psychosocial disability, acquired brain injury, complex trauma or forensic backgrounds.
- Experience developing Interim or Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans and providing implementation training.
- Experience working with complex behaviours of concern and regulated restrictive practices.
- Knowledge of Queensland restrictive practice authorisation requirements and NDIS Commission reporting processes.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary, community or disability service environments.
Mandatory Employment Requirements
- NDIS Worker Screening clearance (or ability to obtain prior to commencement).
- Working with Children Check / Blue Card where required for the allocated caseload.
- Current Australian driver's licence and access to a reliable, comprehensively insured vehicle for work-related travel.
- Current professional registration or association membership where applicable to the practitioner's discipline.
- Evidence of Australian working rights and completion of all required pre-employment checks.
- Capacity to use a computer, secure clinical systems and telehealth platforms effectively.

Casual Employment Conditions
Engagement is offered on a casual basis. Hours may vary according to participant referrals, service demand, practitioner availability and operational requirements, and no minimum number of hours is guaranteed. The role may include travel, after-hours appointments or work across different service settings by prior agreement. Remuneration and applicable casual loading will be confirmed in the employment offer and applied in accordance with the relevant employment obligations.

Pay: From $67,706.37 per year
