Alice Springs Hospital has a unique opportunity for ACEM registrars to undertake a special skills post in Aboriginal Health as part of an ED Care Coordination Team. Working with a Social Emergency Medicine lens you will engage in a bicultural model of working and learning – alongside an Aboriginal ED Care Coordinator and an Aboriginal Health Practitioner.
The team’s model of bringing medical, cultural and social expertise together, allows you to really understand the drivers behind your patients’ presentations, and assist from a strengths-based approach.
The ED Care Coordination team provides case coordination for a group of the EDs most vulnerable Aboriginal frequent attenders. Drivers of presentations include many of the social determinants of health including homelessness, chronic medical conditions, mental illness, alcohol and other drugs, cognitive impairment (often from repeated trauma), domestic violence, displacement and poverty.
There is significant interaction with key internal and external services - eg with regular meetings with The term supervisor is a local FACEM – with weekly meetings between the team and term supervisor to undertake case reviews and development of care plans. Day to day supervision is undertaken by the duty FACEMS in ED. The usual workweek is Monday to Friday 730-330pm – but with some flexibility to work evenings and weekends to allow interaction with certain patient groups.
The hospital services an area of over 1 million square km with around 50000 presentations a year with 42% admission rate, and a median age of 34 years.
The term is ACEM accredited as a special skills position in Aboriginal Health for 3-6 month rotations as well as being TS4 accredited. It is also accredited for ACRRM as part of an Aboriginal Health AST or CGT. The registrar can also access general ED department quality protected teaching for 4 hours a week and we are highly supportive of examinations. Ideally you would combine your Aboriginal Health rotation with an Alice Springs Emergency Department rotation. Alice Springs ED has Tier 2 and Training stage 4 accreditation for non-major and rural ACEM ED training as well as for an ACRRM AST in EM.
