Primary objective
Advance the Northern Territory’s political, economic and cultural interests by developing and delivering strategic international
engagement initiatives that support trade, investment and government priorities.

Context statement
The Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations (DTBAR) supports economic growth by strengthening trade, investment and
international partnerships. This role is part of the Office of Asian Relations and contributes to attracting trade and investment, fostering
strategic relationships and enhancing the Territory’s international profile.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead strategic international engagement initiatives that support NT Government trade, investment and international priorities.
2. Provide strategic leadership for the implementation of the Northern Territory's international engagement agenda, identifying

emerging opportunities, managing risks and driving coordinated action across government.
3. Build productive relationships with government, diplomatic, industry and international stakeholders.
4. Lead the planning and delivery of international engagement activities, including ministerial missions, inbound delegations, strategic

events and government-to-government engagement, ensuring outcomes align with government priorities.
5. Provide high-level advice on international policy, geopolitical developments and bilateral relationships.
6. Represent the NT Government in negotiations and senior domestic and international forums.
7. Lead, develop and support a high-performing and inclusive team.
8. Promote continuous improvement in policy, project management and stakeholder engagement practices.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience providing strategic leadership in a complex government, international relations, trade, investment or

public policy environment.
2. Highly developed strategic thinking, judgement and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex issues into practical advice

and deliver innovative solutions.
3. Strong communication, negotiation and influencing skills, including a demonstrated ability to prepare high-quality ministerial,

executive and Cabinet-level documentation and represent an organisation at senior levels.
4. Proven ability to build partnerships across government, industry and international stakeholders.
5. Experience leading complex projects and managing competing priorities.
6. Demonstrated leadership capability, including mentoring, developing and motivating staff while fostering a positive, inclusive and

high-performing workplace culture.
7. Understanding of geopolitical, economic and trade issues relevant to the NT and Asia-Pacific region.

Desirable
1. Qualifications in international relations, public policy, economics, business, law, commerce or a related discipline.
2. Experience working in, or closely with, government, diplomatic, international trade or investment organisations.
3. Proficiency in one or more Asian languages and/or experience living or working overseas.
