About the Role
Passionate Fire Engineering Pty Ltd is seeking a Developer Programmer to design, develop, modify, test, implement and maintain software applications used in the delivery and administration of specialist fire engineering consultancy services.
The position focuses on developing secure, reliable and scalable software applications that automate engineering calculations, report generation, project management, workflow processes, document management and general business operations.
The successful candidate is expected to work closely with fire safety engineers and management to translate business, user and engineering requirements into practical software solutions that improve operational efficiency, consistency and service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
The Developer Programmer’s responsibilities include:
- Analyse business, engineering and user requirements and translate them into technical specifications and software solutions.
- Design, write, modify, maintain and optimise program code in accordance with approved system specifications, coding standards and quality requirements.
- Develop, implement and maintain web-based applications supporting fire engineering calculations, project management, technical reporting, document management and client collaboration.
- Develop and maintain software modules that apply calculation methods, algorithms, assumptions and engineering criteria specified by qualified fire safety engineers.
- Develop software modules relating to evacuation analysis, smoke movement, sprinkler activation, fire detection, fire resistance and tenability assessment.
- Design, develop and maintain application programming interfaces to facilitate data exchange between engineering, document management, workflow, project management and financial systems.
- Develop and maintain relational databases, data models, database queries and data-processing routines.
- Develop integrations with Microsoft 365 applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams and Power Automate.
- Develop integrations with project management systems to automate project workflows, task allocation, timesheet recording, deadline monitoring, resource tracking and project reporting.
- Develop integrations with accounting and financial systems to support project budgeting, invoicing, timesheet processing, payment tracking and financial reporting.
- Develop secure integrations with approved artificial intelligence services, including OpenAI and Anthropic application programming interfaces, for document processing, information retrieval, technical content management and workflow automation.
- Develop software applications to automate the preparation of Fire Engineering Design Briefs, Fire Engineering Reports, engineering calculation records, schedules, tables and technical appendices.
- Develop automated Microsoft Word, Excel and PDF document-generation processes.
- Test, debug, troubleshoot and resolve software defects, integration issues, data-processing errors and application performance problems.
- Conduct unit, integration, regression, performance and user acceptance testing to assess software functionality, quality, reliability and security.
- Review and improve existing software applications, program code, databases and system integrations.
- Prepare and maintain program documentation, technical specifications, database documentation, system architecture records, user documentation and operational procedures.
- Apply secure coding practices, role-based access controls, authentication controls, data-protection measures and appropriate cybersecurity procedures.
- Use Git or comparable source-control systems to manage program code, software versions and development changes.
- Participate in software deployment, configuration, maintenance, upgrades, monitoring and ongoing application support.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of software functionality, automation processes and internal business systems.
- Collaborate with fire safety engineers and management during requirements development, software testing and system implementation.
- Provide technical support, guidance and user training for internally developed software applications.
Fire engineering methodologies, assumptions, design criteria and technical outputs incorporated into the software are reviewed and approved by appropriately qualified fire safety engineers. The Developer Programmer is responsible for software architecture, coding, implementation, testing, documentation and technical maintenance.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Applicants are expected to demonstrate the following qualifications and experience:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- At least two years of relevant professional experience as a Developer Programmer, Software Developer or in a closely related software development role.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, modifying, testing, implementing and maintaining software applications.
- Experience in full-stack web application development.
- Experience with one or more programming technologies, such as PHP, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, .NET, Java or comparable programming languages and frameworks.
- Experience developing RESTful application programming interfaces, database-driven applications and software integrations.
- Experience with SQL databases and relational database management systems.
- Experience using Git or comparable source-control systems.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse business and user requirements and translate those requirements into reliable software solutions.
- Demonstrated experience in software testing, debugging, troubleshooting and performance optimisation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical communication skills.
- Ability to prepare clear technical specifications, program documentation and user guidance.
- Ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical personnel.
Desirable Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Microsoft Graph and Power Automate integration.
- monday.com application programming interface integration and workflow automation.
- Xero application programming interface and financial system integration.
- OpenAI or Anthropic application programming interface integration.
