Primary objective
To manage and maintain library collections, including acquisition, cataloguing, digitisation, and electronic resources, while
supporting service development, reporting, and improvements across the Collections and Content teams to ensure materials
are accessible and well-managed.
Context statement
Library and Archives NT is the is the premier public research library and archival organisation of the Northern Territory,
dedicated to creating connections with and for communities, and serving as a trusted steward of Territory memory and
history. Its collections include NT Government archives, books, newspapers, photographs, maps, magazines, ephemera,
websites, letters, diaries, community and organisational records, and oral histories.
Library and Archives NT is a branch of the Northern Territory Government’s Department of People, Sport and Culture.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Create and enhance catalogue and metadata records for physical and digital collections, including government reports,
ephemera, and manuscript archives, using standard cataloguing and metadata practices.
2. Enhance metadata with specialised descriptions relevant to the Northern Territory to improve discovery, accessibility,
and compliance with local collection policies and standards.
3. Review and verify metadata records submitted by external parties to ensure compliance to institutional policies,
metadata standards, and quality requirements.
4. Apply digital preservation principles and procedures to manage and safeguard digital collections, including converting
multimedia materials to appropriate digital formats.
5. Digitise library collection materials in accordance with LANT priorities and workflows, including coordination of requests
and delivery of digitised files to users.
6. Perform administrative and data management tasks for digitisation, including invoices, record-keeping, and reporting.
7. Provide client-focused support via service points, email, and enquiry systems, assisting with access, requests, and
delivery of digital resources.
8. Produce regular and ad hoc reports and statistics to support evaluation, collection development, and service
improvements.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. High level knowledge of bibliographic control, cataloguing tools, and relevant metadata schemas.
2. High level knowledge of serials acquisition, accessioning processes, and related collection management tasks.
3. Demonstrated commitment to high-quality, client-focused service.
4. Well-developed digital literacy, including the use of library systems, digital repositories, and data management tools.
5. Understanding of digitisation processes and their role in the preservation and access of library collections.
6. High level of accuracy and attention to detail in performing tasks and maintaining records.
7. Well-developed written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills with ability to provide clear technical instructions.
8. Highly motivated with the ability to prioritise tasks and complete work efficiently within agreed timeframes.
Desirable
1. Library Technician qualification recognized by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
2. Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, and policies relating to legal deposit and copyright.
