Primary objective
As a member of the school leadership team, provide leadership and guidance to achieve optimal educational outcomes for
students across the school. The Senior Teacher Special Education should work collaboratively in the delivery of, and support
in high quality educational programs for students with a range of additional needs in partnership with families, community
and professional networks to achieve optimal educational outcomes for students.
Context statement
Howard Springs Primary School is located in Darwin’s rural area, approximately 20 minutes from Darwin. The school has an
enrolment of approximately 301 students, ranging from Preschool to Year 6. The student population reflects the diversity
of our community with 20% identifying as Indigenous, 7% as English as a Second Language/Dialect and 44% are identified
as Students with Disability. The school has a strong focus on wellbeing and embeds a School Wide Positive Behaviour
approach. The school adopts collaborative planning and implements explicit instruction across all learning areas, with a strong
focus on community. Howard Springs Primary School is committed to delivering excellence and equity in education with a
focus on positive relationships and high expectations.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide leadership to teachers in matters relating to curriculum delivery and assessment, student welfare and behaviour
management to meet the individual needs of the student.
2. Coordinate the organisation and manage the resources within Special Education.
3. Participate fully as a member of the school management team and assist in the coaching mentoring and Professional
Development of Special Education staff.
4. Collaboratively work with staff, families, agencies and Student Support Services to implement processes that support
students with additional needs.
5. Undertake an appropriate teaching load.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Recognised qualification relevant to special education and/or extensive current knowledge and experience in this field.
2. Proven ability to lead the essential elements of teaching and management of students with high support needs and impart
this information to team members.
3. Proven team building and management skills which includes working collaboratively across the school.
4. Demonstrated proven ability to effectively communicate using various means of communication and display appropriate
interpersonal skills with students who have a diverse range of disabilities and needs.
5. Demonstrated experience and ability to perform essential clerical and reporting mediums within timeframes.
6. Demonstrated professional experience in working collaboratively and communicating effectively with school personnel,
professional teams, departmental officers and industry that support continued productive partnerships.
