About the Role
As a Legal Officer, you will be providing, and assisting in the provision of, legal and policy advice to the NSW Electoral Commission, the NSW Electoral Commissioner and internal stakeholders on matters related to elections and electoral law. You will have the opportunity to develop your administrative law and statutory interpretation skills whilst working on high-profile and diverse matters. You will be supporting the Commission in relation to the 2027 State General Election and beyond.
The role is an ongoing full-time position.
Key knowledge, experience and essential requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualifications.
- Admission as a lawyer and hold, or be eligible to hold, a Law Society of NSW Practising Certificate
- Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support the advice and services provided by the Legal team.
- Be able to provide legal and policy support to more senior legal officers in their areas of practice, which include regulatory prosecutions; statutory interpretation and instrument drafting; and preparation of instructions to the Crown Solicitor’s Office.
- Experience in preparing correspondence, research reports, submissions, briefing notes and other documents as required.
- Relevant knowledge and skills to be able to contribute to the development of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legislation governing the functions of the Commission
- You must be politically neutral with no affiliation to political parties or lobbyists/third party campaigners (see other information section at the bottom of this page).
- A satisfactory criminal record check result.
