Occupation: Retail Manager (General)
Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time
Ordinary Hours: 38 hours per week
Reporting To: Director
Supervises: Console Operators, Retail Assistants and other service-station employees
Role Overview
AHM Associates Pty Ltd requires an experienced Retail Manager to oversee the complete retail operations of its Fuel Plus service station. The position is responsible for ensuring that the convenience store and fuel forecourt operate efficiently, safely and profitably while maintaining reliable service for local residents, motorists and passing customers.
The Retail Manager will plan and control daily trading activities, manage employees, oversee fuel and merchandise inventory, coordinate suppliers, monitor sales and operating costs and maintain appropriate financial controls. The position will also be responsible for customer service standards, promotional activities, workplace safety, loss prevention and the overall presentation of the premises.
The role carries genuine managerial responsibility and requires independent decision-making across staffing, stock management, purchasing, budgeting and operational performance. Although the Retail Manager may support frontline operations during particularly busy periods, the principal function of the position is to organise and control the establishment rather than perform routine console or sales-assistant duties.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
I. Retail Operations Management
Plan, organise and control the daily operations of the convenience store and fuel forecourt, ensuring efficient trading, appropriate staffing, high service standards and the uninterrupted delivery of retail services.
II. Product Range and Merchandising
Determine the appropriate product mix for convenience items, food, beverages, tobacco products, automotive supplies and other merchandise. Develop product displays, promotional offers and merchandising arrangements based on customer demand and sales performance.
III. Fuel and Stock Control
Monitor fuel and merchandise inventory, establish appropriate stock levels and coordinate replenishment. Review tank readings, fuel deliveries, sales records and stocktake results to identify shortages, wastage, expiry, shrinkage or unexplained variances.
IV. Purchasing and Supplier Coordination
Manage purchasing activities and maintain relationships with fuel distributors, merchandise suppliers and service contractors. Review supplier pricing, product quality, delivery performance and payment terms and negotiate commercially suitable arrangements.
V. Sales and Financial Performance
Monitor fuel volumes, merchandise sales, gross margins, labour expenditure and operating costs. Analyse financial and sales information, prepare performance reports and implement strategies to improve revenue, profitability and operational efficiency.
VI. Budgeting and Financial Controls
Prepare and administer operational budgets and oversee cash floats, point-of-sale transactions, electronic payments, fuel cards, shift reconciliations, safe balances and banking preparation. Investigate cash shortages, drive-offs and unusual transactions.
VII. Staff Recruitment and Rostering
Recruit, induct and supervise console operators, retail assistants and other employees. Prepare staff rosters according to operating hours, customer demand, employee availability and approved labour requirements.
VIII. Training and Performance Management
Allocate duties, establish performance expectations and monitor employee attendance, conduct, productivity and service delivery. Provide ongoing training in customer service, cash handling, stock control, fuel-station safety and emergency procedures.
IX. Customer Service Management
Establish and maintain professional customer service standards across all shifts. Resolve enquiries, complaints, refunds and service concerns and introduce practical improvements based on customer feedback and purchasing patterns.
X. Safety, Security and Compliance
Ensure compliance with applicable workplace health and safety, fire safety, food-handling, environmental and fuel-retailing requirements. Maintain procedures for fuel spills, emergencies, equipment faults, age-restricted sales, theft and other operational risks.
XI. Premises and Equipment Management
Ensure the store, forecourt, storage areas and customer facilities remain clean, secure, functional and professionally presented. Coordinate maintenance of fuel equipment, refrigeration units, point-of-sale systems, CCTV, alarms and other business assets.
XII. Business Reporting and Improvement
Maintain accurate records of sales, purchases, fuel deliveries, inventory movements, expenses and incidents. Report regularly to the Director and implement operational, promotional and cost-control initiatives that support the continued performance of the Fuel Plus service station.
Qualifications and Experience
The position requires:
- An AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma in retail management, business management or a closely related discipline; or at least three years of relevant retail management experience where accepted in substitution for a formal qualification.
- Demonstrated experience managing a retail store, service station, convenience store or comparable customer-facing establishment.
- Experience supervising employees, preparing rosters and maintaining workplace performance standards.
- Practical experience in purchasing, stock control, supplier coordination, cash reconciliation and financial reporting.
- Sound knowledge of workplace safety, security, loss prevention and customer service procedures.
- Experience using point-of-sale, inventory-control and business-reporting systems.
