Drainer – Civil Construction (334113 Drainer)
Universal Strength Civil & Mining Pty Ltd is seeking an experienced Drainer to join our civil construction team in Western Australia.
The position is a permanent full-time role performing drainage, sewer, stormwater and underground civil infrastructure works across subdivision, roadwork and civil construction projects throughout Perth and regional Western Australia.
We are seeking an experienced Drainer who can safely and competently complete drainage installations from construction drawings and specifications while working as part of an established civil construction team.
Role Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Installing underground sewer, stormwater and drainage systems in accordance with construction drawings, specifications and project requirements.
- Installing PVC sewer and drainage pipework, concrete and plastic stormwater pipework and associated fittings.
- Undertaking pipe laying, bedding, jointing, alignment, backfilling and compaction.
- Installing sewer maintenance structures, manholes, drainage pits, lids, junctions and associated drainage infrastructure.
- Installing and assisting with water-main infrastructure and underground services where required.
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, drainage plans, long sections, details and construction specifications.
- Using laser levels and other surveying information to establish and maintain required pipe grades, falls and invert levels.
- Checking pipe alignment, levels and installation quality throughout construction.
- Carrying out trenching and excavation works associated with underground drainage installations.
- Working safely in deep excavations and trenches using approved trench-support and shoring systems.
- Assisting with installation and removal of trench shields and shoring equipment.
- Working around existing underground utilities including water, sewer, stormwater, communications, gas and electrical services.
- Identifying underground services using approved plans, BYDA information, potholing and service-location requirements.
- Performing drainage works in congested civil construction environments where existing services and infrastructure must be protected.
- Assisting with live connections, tie-ins and preparation of sewer and water-main connections where authorised and required.
- Carrying out excavation preparation, trench trimming, pipe-zone preparation and bedding placement.
- Placing and compacting backfill materials to project requirements.
- Assisting with dewatering and groundwater control where drainage installations are undertaken in wet ground conditions.
- Checking drainage materials, pipes and fittings against engineering drawings and project requirements prior to installation.
- Identifying required pipes, bends, junctions, couplings, fittings, pits and associated materials from construction drawings.
- Assisting with the coordination and ordering of drainage materials required for upcoming works.
- Checking delivered materials against drawings, quantities and installation requirements.
- Communicating material shortages, drawing discrepancies and installation issues to the site supervisor or project engineer.
- Operating civil construction plant where appropriately licensed and authorised, including excavators, loaders, rollers, watercarts and articulated dump trucks.
- Conducting daily plant pre-start inspections and reporting faults, damage or maintenance requirements.
- Assisting with routine maintenance and servicing of civil construction plant and equipment.
- Inspecting lifting equipment prior to use, including chains, slings, D-shackles and lifting accessories.
- Checking lifting-equipment identification tags, inspection dates and working-load limits before use.
- Using approved lifting and rigging practices when handling pipes, pits, trench shields and drainage components.
- Completing work in accordance with company Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and site safety requirements.
- Completing Take 5 assessments, task risk assessments and other required safety documentation before undertaking work.
- Participating in pre-start meetings, toolbox meetings and site safety discussions.
- Identifying hazards and implementing appropriate controls before commencing drainage and excavation activities.
- Maintaining exclusion zones and safe separation between personnel and operating plant.
- Following environmental controls relating to spoil management, sediment, groundwater and construction waste.
- Maintaining a clean, safe and organised work area.
- Working cooperatively with engineers, supervisors, operators, labourers and other trades to complete drainage works safely and efficiently.
- Identifying construction problems and communicating practical solutions to the relevant supervisor or engineer.
- Adapting to changing site conditions, construction priorities and work-front requirements.
- Maintaining a proactive approach to safety, quality and productivity.
- Completing drainage installations to the required standard while meeting project programs and construction deadlines.
Required Skills and Experience
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Previous experience working as a Drainer within the civil construction industry.
- Practical experience installing sewer, stormwater and underground drainage infrastructure.
- Experience with PVC pipe laying and drainage fitting installation.
- Experience installing drainage pits, manholes and associated structures.
- Ability to read and understand drainage and civil engineering drawings.
- Ability to work from grades, falls, levels and invert information.
- Experience using laser levels for drainage installation.
- Knowledge of trenching, excavation and trench-support requirements.
- Experience working safely around underground services.
- Understanding of pipe bedding, backfilling and compaction requirements.
- Knowledge of SWMS, SOPs, Take 5s and construction risk assessments.
- Ability to identify hazards and apply practical risk controls.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a civil construction team.
- Good communication skills and a professional attitude.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced civil construction environment.
