The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Care & Protection/Family Law Practice, you'll play a key role in delivering high-quality, culturally safe legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. You'll lead complex Care & Protection and Family Law matters, mentor and support junior solicitors, and provide strong advocacy that strengthens families, empowers communities and advances access to justice. Each day, you will:
- Deliver high-quality, culturally safe legal advice and representation in complex Care & Protection and Family Law matters.
- Lead, mentor and support junior solicitors, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
- Manage a diverse caseload, including legal research, court appearances, preparing briefs and instructing counsel.
- Maintain excellence in legal practice by keeping up to date with legislation, case law, court procedures and professional standards.
- Build strong relationships with colleagues, clients and stakeholders while ensuring compliance with ALS policies, ethical obligations and legislative requirements.
- Contribute to legal reform initiatives and travel as required to provide legal services to regional and remote communities.
Your Story & Strengths
You are an experienced Senior Solicitor with a strong background in Care & Protection and Family Law and a genuine commitment to social justice. You bring exceptional legal expertise, sound judgement and leadership, together with a deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, empowering clients, mentoring others and delivering meaningful outcomes for community. Key strengths include:
- Current NSW Practising Certificate with at least 4 years' experience in Care & Protection and Family Law (domestic violence experience is highly regarded).
- Strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, with a commitment to delivering culturally safe and community-focused legal services.
- Demonstrated expertise in Care & Protection and Family Law, with excellent advocacy, legal research and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor and support junior solicitors while managing a complex and demanding caseload.
- Exceptional communication, stakeholder engagement and time management skills, with the ability to work autonomously and exercise sound judgement.
- A commitment to social justice, with the resilience to support clients with complex needs and the flexibility to travel as required.
