Primary objective
Undertake complex statistical analyses of justice system data, prepare research reports for internal departmental use, and
provide expert evidence-based advice to Government and Executives relating to the interpretation of justice system data.
Context statement
This position is influential in informing public policy and programs relating to the Government’s justice reform agenda and
contributes to both statistics and evaluation work.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertake statistical research projects to assess the impact of programs and policies on individuals’ contacts with the
justice system.
2. Provide technical leadership and supervision in the development and application of statistical methods for the analysis
and interpretation of reoffending and other justice-related issues.
3. Prepare timely and accurate statistical reports to monitor the progress of, and build the evidence base for, justice policy
and operational initiatives.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. science, social science, statistics, mathematics, public policy).
2. Highly developed quantitative research, analysis and lateral thinking skills, with a demonstrated capacity to plan,
coordinate and deliver research projects.
3. Experience using multivariate statistical analyses to test assumptions and build an evidence base.
4. Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present complex quantitative information
to a variety of audiences.
5. Demonstrated experience in extraction, transformation and manipulation of data to suit specific questions.
6. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership for professional research officers.
7. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and respectfully with people from diverse cultures and views.
Desirable
1. Relevant post-graduate qualification.
2. Knowledge of current issues in the Northern Territory criminal justice environment.
