Role description
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior MS SQL Database Administrator (DBA) with strong cloud migration expertise to drive the database transition of our core .NET application to Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
In this role, you will be responsible for replicating, migrating, and optimizing our existing MS SQL Server databases into GCP. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in database replication, hands-on experience with GCP data services, and the ability to write robust, automated scripts to ensure a seamless migration with minimal downtime.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Migration & Architecture
- Database Migration: Design and execute the migration strategy to lift-and-shift/replatform MS SQL Server databases from on-premises/legacy hosting to GCP (e.g., Google Compute Engine or Cloud SQL for SQL Server).
- Multi-Environment Replication: Set up, configure, and maintain robust database replication from the existing source to the new GCP Production and Non-Production regions.
- Automation & Scripting: Author, test, and maintain all necessary SQL, PowerShell, or bash scripts required to automate the migration, schema deployment, data verification, and roll-back procedures.
Database Administration & Optimization
- High Availability & DR: Implement and manage SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, mirroring, or log shipping to ensure high availability and disaster recovery across regions.
- Performance Tuning: Optimize database performance pre- and post-migration by analyzing execution plans, indexing, and resource utilization in the GCP environment.
- Security & Compliance: Ensure the new GCP database environments comply with enterprise security standards, implementing proper IAM controls, encryption at rest/in transit, and audit logging.
Collaboration & Support
- Collaborate closely with the infrastructure, DevOps, and .NET application development teams to align database migration with the application lift-and-shift timeline.
- Conduct rigorous cutover testing and validate data integrity between legacy and new GCP environments.
- Provide detailed documentation of the migration scripts, architecture, and operational runbooks.
Required Skills and Experience
- MS SQL Server Expertise: 6+ years of experience as a Production MS SQL DBA supporting enterprise-level environments (SQL Server 2016 and above).
- GCP Migration Experience: Proven experience migrating MS SQL databases to Google Cloud Platform, using tools like GCP Database Migration Service (DMS), Velostrata/Migrate for Compute Engine, or native SQL backup/restore methods.
- Advanced Replication: Deep understanding of SQL Server Replication technologies (Transactional, Merge, Snapshot) and Always On Availability Groups across hybrid or multi-region setups.
- Strong Scripting: Exceptional proficiency in T-SQL and PowerShell (or Python) to automate database deployment and migration tasks.
- Infrastructure-as-Code (Bonus): Familiarity with Terraform for provisioning GCP database infrastructure is highly desirable.
