About our Role
Join the Eastern and Greater Southern Surgical Skills Training Network – Prince of Wales Hospital (EGSSSTN – POWH)!
Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) positions in the Eastern and Greater Southern Surgical Skills Training Network – Prince of Wales Hospital (EGSSSTN – POWH) are designed for Junior Medical Officers who are pursuing a career in surgery. These roles provide the opportunity to deliver effective surgical care to patients under supervision in complex clinical environments while supporting preparation for a future surgical career.
SRMOs are expected to develop advanced clinical capability, including the ability to supervise more junior medical officers and, at times, undertake responsibilities aligned with accredited surgical trainees. This may include the assessment and initial management of emergency surgical patients referred for consultations.
You will provide high-quality clinical management of surgical patients across the EGSSSTN – POWH. Most surgical SRMO rotations are based out of Prince of Wales Hospital. Available rotations for 2026 may include:
Vascular Surgery, Prince of Wales Hospital
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Prince of Wales Hospital
Acute Surgical Unit General Surgery Term, Prince of Wales Hospital
Surgical Close Observation Unit, Prince of Wales Hospital
SRMO Relief Term, Prince of Wales Hospital
Hand Unit, Sydney and Sydney Eye Hospital
Paediatric General Surgery, Sydney Children’s Hospital
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the doctor's skills, knowledge and experience. The Surgical SRMO will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
