Advanced Rigging Pty Ltd is an established Perth-based structural steel erection contractor. We have been operating for over 12 years, servicing industrial builders and steel fabricators across the Perth metro area and regional Western Australia.
We are seeking an experienced Metal Fabricator to join our team on a full-time permanent basis. This is a hands-on site-based role focused on on-site welding, fabrication, and structural steel modifications across a variety of industrial construction projects.
About the role
The Metal Fabricator will be responsible for on-site metal fabrication, welding, and structural steel modifications supporting Advanced Rigging's structural steel erection projects. The role involves working across active construction sites in Perth metro and occasionally regional WA.
Key responsibilities and duties
The Metal Fabricator will perform the following core duties on a full-time basis:
- Study drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine fabrication requirements
- Select, check, and prepare materials, tools, and equipment for use on site
- Mark off and mark out dimensions, references, and reference lines onto metal surfaces
- Set up and operate cutting equipment to cut steel using flame cutters and grinders
- Straighten, bend, form, and shape metal sections and plates using manual tools and portable equipment
- Assemble metal sections and plates on site using bolting and welding techniques
- Position parts for welding by hand or using cranes and hoists in coordination with the site rigging crew
- Tack weld parts before final welding to secure alignment
- Weld metal sections and plates using MMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (flux-cored), and GTAW (TIG) welding processes as required
- Perform on-site steel modifications including cutting, drilling, and welding of connections, brackets, cleats, and structural members
- Grind, dress, and finish welded joints and metal surfaces to specification
- Test welded joints and finished fabrications for compliance with drawings, specifications, and AS/NZS 1554 welding standards
- Repair and modify structural steel members and fabricated components on site
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, plans, and welding procedure specifications
- Support the site crew with fabrication requirements as structural steel erection progresses
- Complete daily pre-start meetings, SWMS sign-on, and SafetyCulture records
- Maintain welding equipment, oxy/acetylene sets, generators, and hand tools
Expectations of the role
- Consistent, high-quality welding work meeting AS/NZS 1554 standards for structural steel welding
- Safe operation of all welding, cutting, and grinding equipment on active construction sites
- Compliance with Advanced Rigging's Safe Work Method Statements and site safety requirements
- Effective communication with Leading Hands, riggers, and other trades on site
- Punctual attendance and reliable availability during standard hours plus occasional Saturday work
- Professional site conduct — respectful to builders, tidy work practices, positive representation of Advanced Rigging
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments
- Continuous focus on quality — first-time-right welding, minimal rework, thorough finishing
Essential requirements (must have)
- Trade qualification — Certificate III in Engineering — Fabrication Trade (MEM30319 or equivalent), or overseas equivalent recognised in Australia
- Minimum 3 years post-trade experience as a Metal Fabricator or Boilermaker
- Welding competency — MMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), and FCAW (flux-cored) processes for structural steel
- Ability to read and interpret structural engineering drawings, welding symbols, and specifications
- Construction Induction (White Card) — current and valid
- Working at Heights ticket — current and valid
- Physical capability to perform the demands of on-site fabrication including working at heights, in confined spaces, and in variable weather
- Valid Australian work rights OR eligibility for skilled visa sponsorship (Skills in Demand visa 482)
- Current driver's licence and reliable transport
Desirable (preferred but not essential)
- GTAW (TIG) welding competency for higher-specification work
- AS/NZS 1554 welder qualification (or equivalent international certification)
- Experience welding on live construction sites (as opposed to shop-based only)
- HRWL Class DG (Dogging) or RB (Rigger) tickets
- Experience with oxy/acetylene cutting and heating
- Familiarity with SafetyCulture or similar site safety apps
- Experience working alongside structural steel erection crews
