CASUAL DISABILITY SUPPORT WORKER – GROUP ACTIVITIES & LIFE SKILLS (TOOWOOMBA)
Relief Wakes is a registered NDIS provider (provider number 4053361903) preparing participant-choice group activities in Toowoomba and surrounding communities. We are seeking a respectful, organised and creative casual support worker who can help participants build confidence, independence, everyday skills and community connections in a safe small-group setting.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You will help plan and facilitate flexible activity sessions where each participant can choose what is meaningful to them. Activities may include:
- cooking, meal preparation, budgeting, shopping and everyday living skills
- social-skills and communication practice
- creative projects, board games, gardening and community connection
- digital skills and practical problem-solving
- gentle exercise and safe outdoor activities
- community access, travel confidence and public-transport training
- quiet, sensory-friendly or relaxation choices
Participants may choose to join, observe, change activities, take a break or decline. The role is to coach and encourage participants to do as much as possible for themselves—not to take over.
Every activity or support must be person-centred and delivered only when it matches the participant’s choices, goals, plan, assessed needs and completed service arrangements; is within Relief Wakes’ registered scope and demonstrated organisational capability; has appropriate funding confirmation where required; and has approved staffing, consent and risk controls.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design practical, engaging and achievable group activities based on participant choices and goals.
- Prepare safe activity stations, equipment and materials before each session.
- Welcome participants and explain choices in accessible ways.
- Follow each participant’s support plan, communication needs, risk controls and authorised support arrangements.
- Teach or practise everyday, social, community and travel skills at an appropriate pace.
- Adapt activities for different communication, mobility, sensory, learning and support needs.
- Maintain dignity, privacy, choice and control.
- Apply food-safety, allergy and cross-contamination controls for cooking activities.
- Support community access or public-transport practice only within approved plans, staffing and risk arrangements.
- Maintain clear exits, safe walkways, cleaning and infection-control practices.
- Complete attendance records, timely case notes and observable outcome notes.
- Promptly report incidents, near misses, hazards, safeguarding concerns and changes in participant needs.
- Work cooperatively with the program lead and other support workers.
- Follow Relief Wakes policies and lawful behaviour-support arrangements. No unauthorised restrictive practices are permitted.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- legal right to work in Australia
- current NDIS Worker Screening clearance, or capacity to obtain one, with authorised verification required before participant-facing duties
- current First Aid and CPR certificates, or capacity to obtain them before participant-facing duties
- respectful communication and reliable, objective record keeping
- experience supporting people with disability, facilitating group activities, teaching practical skills, community participation or a closely related setting
- ability to create and explain a simple activity that builds participant independence
- ability to work calmly in a shared multi-activity environment
- smartphone suitable for secure rostering and work records
- current Australian driver licence where community outings or driving form part of an allocated shift
A Working with Children (Blue Card) clearance will be required only where an allocated role involves child-related work. Participant transport must not occur unless the worker, vehicle and specific arrangement have been separately checked and authorised.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
- Certificate III or higher in Individual Support, Disability, Community Services or a related field
- supporting autistic people, people with psychosocial disability or people with varied communication needs
- designing or facilitating life-skills, social-skills, cooking, budgeting, digital-skills, gardening, creative, recreation or community activities
- helping people develop travel confidence or public-transport skills under approved plans and risk controls
- food safety, positive behaviour support, mental health or outdoor-activity experience
- adapting activities for different abilities, preferences and sensory needs
PRACTICAL EXERCISE
Applicants who progress may be invited to submit a short, genuine activity outline or demonstration based on their own strengths. Professional design or computer skills are not required. The exercise is used consistently to understand how candidates plan for participant outcomes, inclusion, materials, staffing, safety and facilitation. It is part of recruitment and is not an offer of employment.
PAY AND CONDITIONS
Casual rates will be paid under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS Award). Classification and pay point depend on the actual duties, qualifications and experience. Applicable casual loading, penalty rates and allowances will be paid.
SAFE RECRUITMENT
Applications must be submitted through Indeed. Do not upload or email identity documents, screening cards, police checks or medical information at the initial application stage. Applicants who progress will receive Relief Wakes’ secure organisational method for providing required compliance documents.
Appointment and participant-facing duties are subject to role suitability, references, right-to-work verification, authorised human verification of role-specific qualifications and clearances, and completion of Relief Wakes induction. This vacancy is casual and does not guarantee minimum hours.
