Mobility Access Modifications has been building high-quality access solutions across Melbourne for more than 25 years. Our work supports elderly clients, people with disability, and mobility-impaired clients in private homes and community settings.

We are seeking an experienced Welder First Class / Steel Fabricator to join our Preston workshop on a full-time, permanent basis.
This role involves precision workshop-based fabrication and welding of structural pipe handrails, banister rails, brackets, frames and other steel components used in access modification work. The successful applicant will be required to read and interpret technical drawings, prepare materials, perform high-quality welding, assemble fabricated components and complete work to specification.
This position is aligned to Welder First Class – ANZSCO 322313.
Key Responsibilities
- Fabricate precision steel pipe handrails, banister rails, brackets, frames and related steel components.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, fabrication drawings, job specifications and welding symbols.
- Measure, mark, cut, fit, prepare and assemble steel components.
- Perform high-quality MIG welding.
- Perform TIG welding where required, with stainless steel TIG experience highly regarded.
- Use workshop tools and fabrication equipment, including saws, grinders, drills, jigs, clamps and other metal fabrication equipment.
- Grind, finish and prepare completed work to required quality and presentation standards.
- Check completed work for accuracy, alignment, weld quality and compliance with job specifications.
- Work with materials including mild steel, stainless steel and other metals used in custom fabrication.
- Maintain safe work practices, including correct use of PPE and safe handling of tools, materials and equipment.
- Work independently in a workshop environment while communicating clearly with supervisors, installers and other team members.
- Maintain welding equipment, tools and the work area in a clean, safe and organised condition.
- Complete job records, timesheets, quality checks and other documentation where required.
Skills and Experience Required
To be considered for this role, applicants must have:
- Proven experience as a Welder, Welder First Class, Steel Fabricator or similar trade role.
- Strong MIG welding capability.
- Experience fabricating steel pipework, handrails, banister rails, frames or similar structural steel components.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work to specifications.
- Strong measuring, cutting, fitting and assembly skills.
- High attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
- Ability to work safely, reliably and consistently in a workshop environment.
- Ability to work autonomously and meet production deadlines.
- Good communication skills and a team-focused attitude.
- Current driver’s licence and reliable transport.
Qualifications
Applicants should have one of the following:
- AQF Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade, Welding, or equivalent, including relevant on-the-job training; or
- AQF Certificate IV in a relevant trade qualification; or
- At least three years of relevant welding/fabrication experience in place of formal qualifications.
Additional experience in structural pipe fabrication, handrails, banister rails, disability access products, stainless steel fabrication, TIG welding or custom fabrication will be highly regarded.
