What you'll be doing
In this senior hospitalist role, you will:
- Provide comprehensive medical assessment and management of patients across Emergency, inpatient wards, oncology,and infusion clinic.
- Work alongside GP ED VMOs to assess emergency presentations, stabilise and transfer admitted patients, and ensure high quality, safe clinical care.
- Undertake daily ward rounds, manage inpatients, lead discharge planning, and coordinate care pathways.
- Deliver basic and advanced resuscitation, arrange retrievals and referrals, and provide confident decision making in acute care settings..
- Offer clinical oversight across the facility and provide leadership, supervision, and teaching to GP registrars, JMOs, and medical students.
- Participate in the on call roster and support other MLHD sites if credentialed.
- Contribute to high quality documentation, patient management planning, and use of clinical information systems.
Applications are strongly encouraged from Rural Generalists with procedural qualifications in:
- Obstetrics: ARANZCOG (Adv P) / DRANZCOG Advanced
- Anaesthetics: DRGA / JCCA

Remuneration and incentives
Remuneration depends on your appointment type, award classification, and scope of practice. The figures below are indicative only and represent what may be earned under applicable NSW Health awards and local arrangements.
Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) GP
Earn up to $247.30/hour (GP rate + practice rate), equating to $474,816 + super for eligible contracts (based on 40 hrs/week for 48 weeks).
Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) Specialist
Earn up to $275.85/hour (Specialist rate + practice rate), equating to $529,632 + super for eligible contracts (based on 40 hrs/week for 48 weeks).
Or progress to Senior Specialist VMO rates, earning up to $293.75/hour, which equates to $564,000 + super (based on 40 hrs/week for 48 weeks).
Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) – Fee For Service & RDSP
Fee for Service and Rural Doctors Settlement Package (RDSP) arrangements follow the Visiting Medical Officer (State) Award and the Public Hospitals VMO Determination.
Payments are based on item numbers, service volumes, and rural loadings rather than a fixed hourly or annual figure.

- Holds MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist General Practitioner or holds general registration and substantial experience of at least 7 years of working as a senior medical officer in a regional or rural NSW emergency medicine department and meets Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements as a GP.
- Knowledge of contemporary clinical management and modern approaches in assessment and management of the broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions. Competence in performing the range of minor urgent procedures commonly undertaken in a rural emergency department including Advanced Life Support and Trauma management.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, and research and quality improvement.
- Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
- Demonstrated commitment to behaviours which align to the NSW Health CORE values and MLHD Values, goals and strategies.
