Primary objective
Provide high-level leadership, strategic advice and oversee the day-to day implementation of communications, media, marketing,
stakeholder engagement, and events management to support the agency and drive the delivery of key government priorities.
Context statement
The Communications and Media team provide strategic communications, media management services, media booking, internal
communication, stakeholder management, video and graphic design production functions for the Department of Education and
Training. The team is also responsible for the coordination and delivery of department wide events including several Territory-wide
awards programs and represent the department at community events.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide leadership and direction across the department and work with ministerial offices on media and communication
opportunities and issues management to drive the positive promotion of the department’s work/image internally and externally.
2. Lead major communications and public relations projects, overseeing planning, logistics, resource allocation, procurement and
contract management of external contracts in line with whole of government centralised processes.
3. Lead and manage media, communications, events, while managing political and stakeholder considerations in accordance with
government and department strategies, policies and procedures.
4. Provide high level advice on media, external and internal communications, issues management and emergency management to
staff, senior agency executives, and school principals on internal and external communications related activity and support early
childhood and training sectors on related matters.
5. Lead and manage the Communications and Media team to deliver services in line with whole of government protocols and
develop and implement agency specific policies and procedures.
6. Build and maintain strong professional networks across the department, public sector, government, and other stakeholders.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Extensive experience in senior communications management with the proven ability to identify and develop communications
and media initiative, to address current political, social and economic issues and lead emergency management responses.
2. Contemporary knowledge of current and emerging trends in communication, stakeholder engagement, marketing, media and
emergency management.
3. Superior written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated experience in communication campaigns and high-level
media management with the ability to represent the department’s interests at all levels.
4. Demonstrated leadership skills in budget and human resource management to sustain a high performing team in a busy work
environment, manage conflicting demands to meet key strategic priorities, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing
environments.
5. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective networks and collaborative partnerships with a range of internal and
external stakeholders locally and nationally with the ability to negotiate successful outcomes.
Desirable
1. Relevant tertiary qualifications or minimum of five years’ experience in a media or communications position.
