1.0 Job Summary
The Assistant Accountant provides accounting and finance support across Australia and New Zealand, assisting with day-to-day financial operations, month-end reporting, compliance activities, and commercial analysis.
This is a hands-on development role suited to a recent Accounting graduate or an accountant in the early stages of their CPA or CA studies. The position offers broad exposure across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, financial reporting, inventory accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and business performance analysis, providing a strong foundation for future progression within finance.
2.0 Key Responsibilities
1. Accounts Payable & Expense Management
- Process supplier invoices accurately and in a timely manner.
- Review and code invoices to the appropriate GL accounts and cost centres.
- Manage invoice approval workflows and follow up outstanding approvals.
- Prepare supplier payment runs in accordance with approved schedules.
- Reconcile supplier statements and resolve invoice discrepancies.
- Process employee expense claims and corporate credit card reconciliations.
- Maintain supplier master data and support vendor onboarding.
- Assist with month-end accruals and AP cut-off procedures.
2. Month-End Accounting & Financial Control
- Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts and supporting schedules.
- Prepare and post journals including accruals, prepayments, intercompany transactions and lease accounting entries.
- Complete balance sheet reconciliations including bank, inventory, intercompany and other general ledger accounts.
- Perform daily and monthly bank reconciliations.
- Assist with cash flow reporting and forecasting.
- Support month-end close activities in accordance with reporting deadlines.
- Ensure accounting records are accurate, complete and compliant with company policies.
3. Budgeting, Forecasting & Commercial Analysis
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
- Support monthly variance analysis against budget, forecast and prior year results.
- Analyse operating expenses and identify trends, risks and opportunities.
- Assist in calculating customer rebates, promotional accruals and other commercial provisions.
- Prepare regular reports and dashboards to support business decision-making.
- Provide financial information and analysis to support operational and commercial teams.
4. Inventory, Costing & Operational Finance Support
- Assist with inventory reconciliations and stocktake activities.
- Investigate inventory variances and support corrective actions.
- Monitor freight and inventory-related accruals.
- Assist with product costing and margin analysis where required.
- Support reporting on inventory movements, stock holdings and slow-moving inventory.
- Work closely with Operations and Supply Chain teams to improve inventory accuracy and reporting.
5. Taxation, Compliance & Audit
- Assist with preparation of BAS, GST and other statutory reporting obligations for Australia and New Zealand.
- Support FBT, payroll tax and other compliance requirements.
- Maintain supporting documentation for tax and audit purposes.
- Assist with year-end audit preparation and auditor requests.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting standards and company policies.
- Support continuous improvement of finance processes and controls.
6. Business Partnering & Continuous Improvement
- Build effective relationships across Finance, Sales, Operations and Customer Service teams.
- Assist with the preparation of ad hoc financial analysis and reporting.
- Participate in finance projects and systems improvements.
- Identify opportunities to automate and streamline finance processes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance financial accuracy, efficiency and reporting capability.
