Primary objective
Strategically lead the Northern Territory Geological Survey to deliver strategies and programs to maximise private sector
exploration investment in the Territory and provide expert advice to Government and industry in relation to the Territory’s
geology, resources and exploration sector.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide expert information and advice to government and industry on petroleum and mineral prospectivity, exploration
and resources of the Northern Territory.
2. Provide strategic direction and leadership to the collection, interpretation, synthesis, management and delivery of
geoscientific information and data to stimulate mineral and petroleum exploration in the Territory.
3. Develop and strengthen effective partnerships across industry, government and other key stakeholders to maximise the
benefit of investment in geoscientific programs and initiatives.
4. Lead the development and implementation of strategies and policies to increase levels of investment in exploration and
resource development projects in the Territory.
5. Provide effective leadership, resource management and corporate governance and develop the capacity of the work
unit to effectively deliver outcomes in a project management environment.
6. Work with industry and other stakeholders to promote the Territory’s geological resource potential and overall
attractiveness as an exploration investment destination.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. High-level strategic, negotiation and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to interpret and influence policy
relating to geoscience and exploration investment, and negotiate collaboration with other agencies, research
organisations and industry.
2. Degree in Geoscience, preferably with relevant postgraduate qualifications.
3. High level knowledge of contemporary national and international policies, trends and developments in geoscience and
minerals and petroleum exploration.
4. High level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively communicate
geoscientific and industry information to a diverse range of stakeholders, and develop and maintain good working
relationships with the resources industry and across Government.
5. Demonstrated ability in providing objective high-quality professional input to geoscientific studies and in the
management of geoscientific programs and data, with a strong record of productivity.
6. Well-developed leadership and resource management skills with proven ability to influence others to work effectively
and achieve outcomes in a climate of significant change and complexity.
7. Proven ability to lead diverse teams to achieve outcomes while creating a culture of collaboration, innovation and
accountability.
Desirable
1. High-level knowledge of the geology and petroleum and mineral potential of the Northern Territory.
2. Experience working in the minerals and/or petroleum exploration sector.
3. A strong network of contacts in the Australian and international exploration industry.
