About the role
The Suburban is seeking an experienced Sous Chef to join our kitchen team in a full-time position based in Ringwood, VIC 3134. As Sous Chef, you will be playing a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our culinary services. You will work alongside our Head Chef to maintain our high standards of food quality, consistency and presentation, whilst overseeing kitchen staff and contributing to the development of our menu offerings. Key responsibilities
- Assist the Head Chef in planning, developing and refining menus and special dishes
- Supervise and train kitchen staff, ensuring compliance with food safety and hygiene standards
- Prepare and cook dishes to our established specifications and quality standards
- Monitor food preparation processes and maintain consistency across all dishes
- Manage kitchen inventory, portion control and food waste
- Ensure the kitchen operates efficiently during service, coordinating with all stations
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen at all times
- Leading the kitchen and managing operations in the absence of the Head Chef
- Collaborate with front-of-house staff to ensure seamless service delivery
- Assist in cost control and menu optimisation initiatives
What we're looking for
- Minimum 3-5 years' professional kitchen experience, with ideally 2 years in a supervisory or sous chef capacity
- Strong culinary skills with a proven ability to prepare quality dishes across multiple cooking methods
- Excellent knowledge of food safety, hygiene and sanitation standards, with relevant certifications
- Food Safety Supervisor Certificate is required for this position
- Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience in training and motivating kitchen staff
- Outstanding organisational and time management skills, particularly during high pressure service periods
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Chef and wider kitchen team
- Strong communication skills and a professional attitude
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and public holidays as required in a hospitality environment
- Current food handling certification and Certificate III in commercial cookery
- Experience in an à la carte or contemporary dining environment is advantageous
- Candidates must have full valid work eligibility in Australia
