Location: Canberra, ACT (must be Canberra based)
Work Arrangement: onsite must (some remote work may be allowed)
Contract: Initial contract through to 30 June 2027, with potential 12-month extension
Security Clearance: Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) must
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Software Engineer / Developer with strong ADABAS Natural expertise to join a major Australian Government ICT environment in Canberra.
The successful candidate will support the development, maintenance, enhancement and operational support of enterprise applications. You will work closely with technical teams and stakeholders to deliver robust, scalable and reliable software solutions in a complex and highly regulated environment.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Natural developer to contribute to critical government systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, enhance, maintain and test enterprise-level software applications using ADABAS Natural.
- Analyse business and technical requirements and translate them into effective software solutions.
- Investigate and resolve application issues in collaboration with technical and business teams.
- Identify and correct software errors, undertaking appropriate testing to ensure reliable outcomes.
- Perform modifications, repairs and enhancements to existing programs to improve efficiency and meet changing business requirements.
- Contribute to software design, development, implementation and testing activities.
- Produce high-quality technical, design and system documentation.
- Participate in planning for short-term development activities and contribute to longer-term technical and strategic planning.
- Work collaboratively with other ICT teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex application issues.
- Contribute to project reporting, governance and delivery processes.
- Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced developers and contribute to capability development.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Exercise sound judgement when making technical and business decisions within relevant legislation, policies, standards and procedures.
- Support critical operational requirements during peak periods, including occasional work outside standard business hours when required.
Essential Criteria
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Strong experience developing and maintaining high-quality, robust and scalable enterprise software solutions using ADABAS Natural.
- Proven ability to prioritise competing tasks and deliver quality outcomes within agreed timeframes and budgets.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to work effectively with geographically dispersed teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify opportunities for improvement and facilitate change.
- Ability to contribute to business improvement strategies and drive practical outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance, support capability development and mentor less experienced developers.
- Strong professional integrity and the ability to operate effectively within legislative, regulatory and policy frameworks.
- Ability to work with limited direction while managing moderately complex to complex technical tasks.
- NV1 security clearance must.
Desirable Criteria
The following would be highly regarded:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Information Technology or a related discipline.
- Experience with Natural software version upgrades and the NaturalOne editor.
- Experience with SAS programming and/or PostScript.
- Experience troubleshooting document rendering, managing print streams and supporting enterprise output systems.
- Understanding of Australian Government ICT frameworks and governance requirements.
- Previous experience working within Australian Government or similarly regulated environments.
