Fixed-term for 12 months, full-time,
$81,744 to $94,261 per annum (HEO5) + 17% super

About the role

This role provides specialised technical expertise and technical services to the Animal Genetics Research group to achieve project outcomes. This role requires the ability to provide planning and technical assistance for the coordination and implementation of research projects focused on developing a reference population for development of methane breeding values in cattle and sheep. This will involve hands-on set up of equipment and handling of sheep and cattle for methane recording and other sampling as required. It will also involve animal and data monitoring through various online platforms and upkeep of equipment including maintenance, trouble-shooting and repair as necessary.

Based in Armidale, Technical Officer will assist with management and measurement of sheep and cattle across a range of projects and sites and will involve travel to commercial sheep and cattle properties to undertake research activities.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Skills and knowledge in specialised equipment for methane recording in sheep and cattle
Well developed sheep and cattle handling and monitoring skills
Effective written and verbal communication skills to achieve project outcomes
Problem solving skills and the ability to resolve technical problems independently, quickly and effectively
High level organisation skills
Willingness to learn and adapt quickly to new situations to effectively record data across a range of locations and producer sites
Computer skills across a range of software and ability to learn new programs as required for equipment and animal monitoring
Ability to travel to recording sites across southern Australia

About the School

The School of Environmental and Rural Science has active and strong research programs across three research themes Animal Sciences, Life, Earth, Environment, and Plant, Soil, Environment. ERS offers a range of course options for students looking to specialise in the environmental sciences and management, agricultural and rural sciences and management. We offer Bachelor degrees in Agriculture, Agrifood Systems, Animal Science, Agriculture and Business, Environmental Science, Geo Sciences, Plant Sciences, Rural Science and Zoology. Postgraduate courses include Honours, Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas, coursework and Research Masters degrees, and PhD.

The Animal Science group consists of leading academics and researchers working collaboratively across a range of research groups to address challenges around production of food and fibre from animals, and to develop efficient and sustainable animal production systems. Our honours and postgraduate research students are embedded within and make valuable contributions to our diverse research programs highly supported by industry funding.
