Westmead Hospital

It was a pleasure having done my Nursing clinical placement at Westmead Public Hospital. Although I lived far and had to begin travel from 5:30am it was worth the experience! The placement allowed me to put my skills and knowledge to the ultimate test. I learnt what was great at and enjoyed and what I wasn't so great at and therefore didn't enjoy. I did my 2 placement for 1 week for a span of 2 years. Working there truely had a strong teamwork ethic, there were a variety of different backgrounds working under great management, everyday was well planned and achieved to our best ability. All my mentors were very enthusiastic about working together and made even the tough and "boring" parts of the job fun. I had the opportunity to care for patients I wont forget conversations and stories they told me. Seeing my patients the next day greeting me and becoming healthier makes everyday so much better!

Every day was rewarding in helping the public,doctors and nurses. I have learned so much from mutual respect, compassion, professionalism, honesty, trust, and accountability. I have excellent organisational and time management skills and with accurate keyboard/data entry skills with attention to details.
I am reliable a worker, accustomed to demanding work, experienced in the operation of computer systems, other office systems and technology as well as in preparation and processing Medical Records, legal documents and Claims. I am committed to EEO, OH&S, Ethical Practices and the principles of Cultural Diversity. I also abide by the Code of Conduct.

Westmead hospital as a major trauma unit allows exposure to a wide variety of clients and medical complaints. The patients we receive are complex in their management. Through this exposure I have learnt specialized skills in neuro/trauma but skills that apply to other areas of medicine. Dealing with such ill clients and thier families can be taxing but to see them recover and know that you have been apart of that process is rewarding. It also rewarding to pass on your knowledge to other staff and see them mature in that knowledge. Working in the unit that I do with the team and my manager makes doing the job easier and smoother.

i started many years ago and when i first started it was awesome. The management was great to its employees work culture was great. However as time went on so did alot of changes. Job security became threat, which should never be the case in government and your doing your job. Managers being allocated with no management skills and didnt understand how to take the approach to a employee and the culture started to fall that was all happening in my last 5 years at westmead which was very sad because i thought i was going to stay there forever. I got made redundant there, but hope to go back very soon in another department.

What is the best part of working at the company?
It’s huge hospital and they have so many wards that needs on the hospital and the nurses were helpful and patient with others 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When you have to work in different wards and facing with new patients and visitors and also different staff 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Old staff they are helpful but they have to be more sharp I think

a job that keeps u busy from the moment u start to the time u go home, when talking. to people on the phone to be courtious and helpful, and deal with emergencies quick and thouroughly. listen to management and follow orders and of course to be able to talk to management when needed, co workers are important to be able to enjoy the work we do. hardest part of the job is answering emergency calls and getting them done quickly. the most enjoyable part of the job is knowing that u have helped so many people in one day by answering their call.

I learnt that working together is fun and can can be also forstraighting. Because we are associating ourselfy with different kind of people and we should be friendly to one an other. Actually I went there for work placement but they worker were very helpful to me. Transfering a patient from the bed to a wheelchair, it very hard. I enjoy observing the Rigestered nurses giving medication to the patient and it's gives me more energy to press-on.

Registering patients and updating details, answering phone queries regarding patients and general enquiries, data entry, discharging of patients medical records, admitting patients within Emergency, working in a team environment liaising with doctors, nurses and paramedics. 

Hardest part of the job is to see sick patients and there families go through the turn for the worst. 

I enjoy working with a team environment and empathising with sick patients and there needs to make them comfortable whilst in hospital.

unfortunately working at westmead was a horrible experience.  There was an extreme amount of bullying both from peers and management; a great deal of unfairness and I believe there are many people who work there among the nursing staff who have mental health/anger control issues.  Unfortunately the theatre can be a very confronting and strange environment and after some time could possibly affect one's state of mind long term. The doctors/surgeons were generally wonderful and very professional however.

First of all, what was important to me is that there was always work. Only a few shifts were cancelled. The staff are always friendly and welcoming and this was something I love as a casual employee. Managers are ready to listen any time and pay close attention to their employees.

The hardest part of the job was getting myself familiarised with different wards as well as their routines as I worked in different wards.

Overall, it is a great place.
