When I joined the department I was really pleased to be working there. Sadly, the management team lack leadership skills and vision and will only consider the ideas of others when a similar idea is passed down from a more senior level e.g. Dep Sec or Secretary. Staff are overworked and social interaction. by way of stopping to talk to a colleague is not encouraged. Innovation is suppressed and feedback from the staff survey is not acted upon in a meaningful way. There have too many changes at the most senior levels meaning lots of new staff with little or no knowledge of government and it would seem no mentoring provided to these staff to ensure they comply with government legislation, regulations and guidelines. The worst thing would have to be attention to change management, which is treated as an event rather than a process in the Department. Unfortunately, the event never ends it is one change after another with no time to ever bed down the previous changes to measure how effective they are - what's more the people who know the most about the Department are rarely asked about what needs to change and how changes ought to be made. There seems to be no attention to change management theory and very little in the way of a collaborative plan about how the Department is going to get from being in state A to state B. The Secretary is a really friendly and approachable man who has a very difficult job ahead of him because although he is keen on cultural change and reform there are a lot of people in subordinate positions to him who do not embrace the positive things he would like to see happening. 

I worked for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning for 2.5 years. I started as a Policy Officer (VPS 3) and moved up to a Senior Policy Advisor (VPS 5) during that time. The general working culture was very positive, access to professional development was great, and colleagues really care about what they do.
I worked on three different teams during this time. My advice to job seekers is to get hired in whatever job you can get, as there are great opportunities to move across and up within the organisation in a short amount of time. As with any large organisation, it is very important to question people who work in the general department about the specific team that you are thinking about joining, as culture, competency, and management quality/style varies greatly.

On a typical day at VGSO I would ensure all Solicitors were assisted where needed to ensure smooth running of the office.
I learnt almost everything I know when it comes to Administration here and also time management skills.
Management was a little tough but was supported by all my co workers.
The hardest part of this position was trying to stay positive in a bullying environment.
The most enjoyable was again the variety and also the potential the position had.

The shifts are very long and the days can be extremely busy. For this you are guaranteed a break every 90 mins. It will take its toll on your body and mind but if you are looking for challenging and meaningful work then it can be worth it. A huge bonus is not taking the work home with you (unless you struggle with vicarious trauma). 

This is a very difficult school to work at. Many students have anger management issues and are extremely difficult to manage. Teaching staff do not get enough support with these challenging students. It is a shame because the students who want to learn are deprived from being taught due to the constant disruption of unruly children.

One of the worst, if not the worst places to work. Management don't listen, no opportunities for advancement, zero support and poor communication. Document everything if you work here to build a case against their poor practices.

I loved my time at VPSC . I know for a fact that my manager and the team I was on played a big role in my overall experience.VPSC truly does show appreciation to their employees.Great atmosphere, leadership really cares about your development.

Facilities are excellent.  Open office with great kitchen facilities, breakout areas and conference rooms.  Office is modern and airy.  Management style is friendly and open to collaboration with all areas
