Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA)

VACCA is an Aboriginal organization which supports Aboriginal families, carers and young people who are, have been or at risk of being in the child protection system and out of home care. 
It is the most rewarding and enjoyable job I have ever been in and I love everything about my position there, aswell my colleagues and management who I work with. 
VACCA are also very involved with making change in the system, and all the injustices that Aboriginal families have and continue to be faced with today. 


I have had endless oppertunities at VACCA during my career. I have always been encouraged and heard in my ideas and visions for my clients. I have had amazing supportive managers. I like the vision of VACCA in continuing to keep children connected to family community and Culture. I admire all my colleagues and what they bring to the organisation. I feel there’s so many programs that are effectively servicing and supporting community. The workplace has been very innovative and supportive during covid. I love the inclusive ways of accepting all people. 

This is a very nasty and toxic workplace the senior managers are not interested in cultural safety many highly talented people have left VACCA due to the unsupportive and lazy leadership team. The exceptional high performing staff who moved to VACCA from roles in other agencies have continued to express their concerns but they are ignored. There are major deficits in agency management that need to change to ensure high quality services. Staff are ignored and ostracised and eventually leave VACCA.

Not pleasant. Bad work culture. Stay away from this organisation.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nothing...it is the worst place to work in.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic, unplacent, no support, unfair, inequality, dictatorial 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sad, toxic, panic, anxious, unfair and inequality, unreasonable

Overall Vacca was a nice place to work , but management at times were not clear on expectations from staff . Would say one thing and mean another . My feedback to supervisor is be honest with staff and have more understanding and empathy. I had no interest in free lunches and perks at all , for myself , unfortunately I had health issues within my family so I was unable to take on regular shifts . The staff were lovely though .

Yelled at for doing the right thing
Supervisor had no idea re. Domestic violence and its consequences
Didnt like that I could work well and independently and was well organized
They would Not give me a copy of my performance appraisal which was a good one
Would not recommend them in a pink fit. Go elsewhere.

VACCA was a very toxic place to work it was unbalanced with processes with it being a very high turn over of staff and high 
work loads made it a high stressed work place. 
with personal outlets and goals outside of the work place it helps me continue to be grounded and consistent at my job.

Wages are very low for required workload needed but relaxed casual fun people to work with.
Approachable management team, but strict in funding requirements for clients and families.
Very high demand for compliance in a short time frame.
VACCA compliance too high to continue at relaxed paced causing a stressful environment.

The toxicity of residential care is something I never knew existed before working in the role. It's been very challenging. Management can be difficult to work with, not my direct team leader, but further up the chain of command. I learned that this is not the industry in which I choose to work.
