Work in a team with usually two PCA's and a EN on charge in high care where we work off a list of duties we have to achieve and it consists of showering selected residents who are on the list of duties to do, usually x 2 staff to a lot of the residents that require overhead lifting machines and stand up lifters, I assisted with grooming and dressing the residents and help them get ready for the day and work with each resident to their individual care needs and preferences.  
 
I complete ROD's and document the readings in the observation book located in office wing. Also do BSL's and report readings to the nurse on charge and document it in the Diabetes management book.  
 
I also monitor and make sure each resident is safe in my wing and report any changes in physical health status to the RN on charge and document in progress notes if necessary. 
 
At lunch time i help and direct residents to the dining table and assist with walking them or assist with wheel chairs and other walking aids.  
 
I help hand out the meals and drinks and assist with feeding residents that require full assistance with feeding and drinking or just some assistance if needed.  
 
Also assist in toileting when a resident requests to go or if the residents are unable to tell us we check there continents aids and change when necessary and help transfer them into a commode toileting chair.  
 
I help re position residents in bed to make them comfortable to get them off their side so they don't develop pressure sores mostly for the ones that are bed bounds.  
 
I assist in filling out ACFI assessments, fluid charts, bowl charts, check lists, and resident’s notes if there is selected residents to write up on for the day in their progress notes.  
 
I also communicate with a wide range of allied health professionals that come in and want to know about the residents they ask for.  
 
Accomplishments 
Achieving deadlines on tasks to get done, managing a death of a resident we'll and approaching family members with genuine sympathy and compassion and respect, was told by my manager and care manager that I did a great job at handling a stressful situation.

I'm a good team leader, work we'll in a team, good work ethics, demonstrate compassion, dignity, respect at all times to my residents, communicate we'll with my work colleagues, residents and families plus allied health workers and life style team, i'm a hard worker, reliable, honest, and give my 110% in every job task I preform.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The team that I looked after and the other people within the other teams.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The lack of accountability, mixed messages, setting people up to fail, the poor support for staff and blaming all staff for poor performances when the root cause of issues is line (program) managements inexperience and failure in developing work systems and consistent direction.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Extremely poor. No support for operational staff, but line management will articulate all the textbook phrases of what people want to hear but behind the scenes this is quite a polar opposite. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Balancing looking after client needs and following inconsistent directions from line management that is more about looking after their own professional achievements. Watching the staff work very hard to provide high quality services to clients only to be negatively spoken about by management that they should be doing better.

Working with young children with additional needs is very rewarding, especially when you see how well they progress from the start of the year, up until the end of the year. Of course the job does come with challenges from time to time, but it is worth it in the end, especially seeing how well a young child has flourished and worked hard to overcome every day challenges that most people may unintentionally take for granted. The most enjoyable part of the day is sitting with the children at meal times, that is the perfect time to bond with them, and discuss their interests with them as well as seeing them bond with their peers. The community of people in our work place are of diverse background, so we get to learn different things about different people, such as celebrations, and symbolic meanings, which is very important to know, as everyone's beliefs are important to them. Overall I do enjoy my job and helping young children to learn and thrive in life.

The job was actually enjoyable, and the issue I take is that I was doing a great job. My coworkers were great and we got along well. Unfortunately management at Uniting has become a complete s*** show, and as a result their processes are just ridiculous. The way their probation review works is insane and has no room for grey area. You are either the most amazing thing that ever walked the earth; or you suck and you don’t deserve your job - there’s no in between whatsoever. 
As a result I can see the role I was doing has been advertised at least three times since I left around a year ago - so three more people have cycled through this role in 12 months. How sad for the team that they can’t hold on to an admin… perhaps you should look into why this keeps happening? Why such a large turnover for the one role? You had a fantastic admin who loved the role and the team and you tried to tell her she needed more “initiative” when she couldn’t have had more if it slapped her in the face. 

This organisation loves crisis management. They know what is going to occur but not able to take pro active steps to prevent or avoid it from occurring. Invariably, the lack of action leads to crisis and then management will address it, and declare it a success story to make people feel good.. Due to our inaptness, people are always busy with crisis.. Organisation talk about good business planning but management don;t have the discipline/understanding to practise what it preaches.     

Very hierarchical culture, nothing moves unless it is Okey by senior management.. weighed down by incompetent exces with little BUSINESS experience. There's a lot of management speak but no tangible actions, apart from managing crisis.. SAD

Unrealistic expectations and changes to programs constant.
Dysfunction and failure to support vulnerable staff resulting in bullying by management , no reprimand fir that.
Little positive reinforcement and aupport by management- just told what to do without appropriate training .
Can cause high stress levels naturally.


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Poor

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Overworked no support and more experienced staff never given opportunity to be the leaders .
Bias and lazy management.

Inflexible and Dictatorship style management which  filters down - the culture is therefore anxious and stressed and negative about management.
Sad given it wasn’t this way prior to their merger.
Managers all support managers and HR doesn’t support workers across the board, they support managers.
If you don’t want to advocate for clients or expect flexibility for your own life work balance then this is an ideal organisation.

As a Carer you "hit the ground running" on day shift. Afternoon shift is still busy but not so much as days. 
You need to be a very patient person with a heart of gold. This is not a job you do for money or just a job. Your heart has to be truly in it.
I have learnt to have an open mind.
Managements door is always open and approachable.
Workplace culture is a family atmosphere.
Hardest part of the job would be the managing aggressive Clients. Not being able to spend public holidays with your family. This industry is 24/7, 365 day a week.
Most enjoyable part The people you are caring for and staff working with. You have a sense of achievement of helping someone with their day to day needs.

- There is lack of support and no on the job training.
- Felt like being thrown into the deep end, requests for further training were met with management being passive aggressive. 
- It’s difficult to learn anything there as no one will teach you, you’re expected to just figure it out as you go. 
- Most of the staff are nice and some educators are happy to help out and give a little guidance. 
- There is no opportunity to collaborate with your service leader and team. As an educator, you don’t get to implement ideas. 
- Management are not empathetic of mental illness. 
- Management may threaten your position if you question them. 
- There is a good work/life balance. 

My experience at Uniting consisted of; being bullied, overworked, not valued or heard, watching personal friends of senior staff being promoted over more experienced workers, seeing good staff leave following unfair treatment, male staff being under valued & used as "security" when a male presence was felt required for aggressive clients. I resigned due to this toxic environment.
