Tree of Life

I was there for 4 years. And worked in two branches, with the occasional drop in to other stores for covers. I witnessed the exploitation of some of the girls. Making them prioritise working over their studies (despite being casual). Getting casuals to work full-time/part-time hours without the increased pay rate. Often times poor management at a couple of the branches...not all.  Went from 50% to 25% off for staff discount probably because they needed to make paycuts because of Covid. Expected you to work rain hail or shine, if you were in crippling period pain or sick "just come to work then see how you feel" " Just have panadol"...cool I'll travel on the train or bus where every moment I feel like passing out...very safe. I expressed all of this plus how they initially handled Covid, to management upon leaving...was responded with basically my experience was wrong, and they weren't going to accept accountability. Preaches about sustainability yet wraps each individual clothing item in plastic that we then have to dispose of. Maybe one out of every 100 garments were wrapped in compostable packaging. Appropriated MANY cultures and religions (white sage, indigenous dot art without any of the funds going to indigenous communities, and used Romani slurs on many of their garments). Time and time again many of us expressed how the company could better themselves and expressed concerns...and nothing.  

Day to day was always fun and productive, constantly dealing with customers and doing the stock take was actually more fun than i anticipated. I learned how to organise the stock, ticking off what was there and then re-fill the hangers of clothing/homewares/accessories etc. The management of the store was fair and equal which i liked because in the work place or anywhere else should be equal no matter what rank you have from casual to 1IC (manager). The hardest part of the job would have been the occasional fussy customer or ones that complained about stuff i was un able to deal with so i asked for the help of my manager or 2IC. The co-workers were very nice with a bubbly personality, always helped when i asked for it, and always helped others if they either asked for it or i saw they were struggling i offered in case. And the most enjoyable part of the job was just working there, going in and starting to leaving even thought i didn't want to leave.

Tree Of Life would be a shop i'd love to work at again if given the chance.

I worked at Tree of Life seasonally over the Christmas period. My employment was for 3 months and I only had a total of 5 shifts that were only 3 hours each. This was the same for all the seasonal workers. Throughout the duration of my employment they hired another person to work and she ended up taking a few of my shifts I was already allocated.  After Christmas i didn't get a shift even though the employment technically finished at the end of January. After working there I couldn't use them as a reference because they felt I didn't work with them enough for them to know me fully. Everyone i worked with was super lovely but they said even being a causal there they don't get many shifts. 

with working at Tree Of Life as a Christmas casual was such a wonderful experience!! The process you undertake with applying for this job was so easy for me. I applied online then in days i got a reply  saying they wanted to do a video interview and after that i was successful. You gain so much knowledge and understanding on the process of making the clothing and jewelry when you work there. only downside i could say is you only get at least 7-10 shifts over Christmas because they hire 5 people over that period. such a pleasure working with such a team that are down to earth and treat you like family!

The warehouse is a toxic work environment, with bitchiness and gossiping actively encouraged by management. Breaks are closely monitored, and interruptions are frequent, only to be criticized for talking too much. Contracts are changed without any professionalism or discussion. HR is deeply unprofessional and misses key red flags. The company is also anti-“working mums,” targeting them with fake scenarios and cutting hours if they need time off. Additionally, the clothing is low quality and exploitative.

The Treehouse Theatre mentoring program, provides a platform for young refugees to share their life stories. Through group story telling in a live public theatre performance, young refugees share their personal stories with friends, family and the wider community.

The work space was very safe and pretty with gift items and clothes. Management at the time were particular on cleanliness and sales enthusiasm. the store had a high turnover of clothes and many small items so it was challenging to keep it all tidy and took a rota system for casual staff to do the required jobs. Very exhausting as piles of clothes to tidy up. company benefits made up for that with allowances to purchase clothes and a fun environment with good breaks and self care.

I've worked at Tree of Life for 1.5 years as a casual and as a relieving  assistant manager. The company is great to work for, plenty of people to contact when needed, communication is pretty good between stores and head office, flexible hours (as a casual), and the stores are filled with good vibes and beautiful products. The owners are also really wonderful people that appreciate their staff.

I learnt computer skills & customer service skills.
The management was amazing, very friendly.
My co-workers were great to work with, they made every day exciting & were always willing to help.
The hardest part of the job was processing so much information & juggling a lot of customers at the one time.
I enjoyed every part of the job, meeting new people, learning new things & gaining experience.

It was an enjoyable place to work day to day, with lovely customers and co-workers. The overall ethos of the company in terms of their product is quiet ethical, and the culture is fun, festival, boho.

Unfortunately, the salary benefits were quiet low compared to the expectations of the role. There also really isn't a culture of career progression and development, at least from the store level.
