I worked at Thermo Fisher Australia for 5 years, started out being a great place to work, but what surprised me the most from day one was management never really cared for their staff skillset, treating us like paper cups, disposable. Being a large company that designs and makes their own products, there was an incredible amount of unreplaceable knowledge that had left Thermo while I was there and they didn't mind at all, management just placed the work load on the next person down the ladder and said 'make it work'.

Management soon changed and job turnover increased dramatically, heavier demands, unrealistic deadlines, outsourcing of fabrication overseas, too many contracts at once trying to grab extra money, and hardly any people that left got replaced as this was also saving company money, it was making it an unpleasant stressful environment to work in, if you did not or could not take the extra work load placed on you, management would then slowly push you out the door.

Putting your hand up and asking for help got ignored as no one had any time to assist as they were all pushed to limits as well, this just marked you as the next person to go out the door.
Average life at Thermo is about 5 years, then you start to feel the unrealistic job pressure placed on you to leave, or they dismiss you in a long drawn out pathetic process.

This is only one section of Thermo in Australia, so hopefully other areas around the globe will be different.

My typical day is not typical. My territory consists of all of NSW, north to Grafton, South to the NSW/Vic border and west to Cobar. I speak to customers from stores people to CEO's and all in between. My opinions and advice are sought by consultants, engineers, government employees, Defence Department personnel, hygienists, safety personnel and many more in all manner of industries. My experience covers the toy industry and the motor trade, but mostly the safety and hygiene industry. At Thermo Fisher I have learned the issues facing all levels of government and established myself in the Industrial Hygiene industry. 
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TFS) genuinely attempts to create a good work-life balance for it's employees and is actively involved in social equality for all employees. TFS includes all employees globally in corporate information updates through regular email advice, weekly newsletters and Town Hall meetings. The culture at TFS is inclusive, multicultural and highly educated. I have never worked for a company previously where a Masters degree is considered essential for some roles. 
The hardest part of my role is losing a customer. The most enjoyable part of my role is winning a lost customer back.

Honestly, you can't expect much from a giant corporation when you're at the bottom of the totem pole. They exploit you by trying to convince you that your work is important and good for the world, that they pay well (they don't, you can start at a fast food restaurant making more) and that work life balance is important when it isn't. They are extremely strict with attendance and overtime is mandatory when they decide it's necessary, without warning or care for plans you may have made. When financial times are tough for the company, they cut hours and lay off people who don't deserve it, without regard for the effect that it has on the common worker. This situation is their fault, too, for pushing us to complete work too fast instead of at a normal pace. So now we're out of work. They want to have this moral high ground as a manufacturer of essential bio-pharma materials, but remember that they profit from the exploitation of Henrietta Lacks and the common worker. Don't work here if you can just go work at Del Taco or Panda Express. You'll make more and there will be free meals.

It is undeniable that this is one of the world biggest scientific companies and the sentence itself already explain why people would love to work here. If this is what you’re thinking, I would say you’re right! This is an opportunity to see how global corporate operate. There are lots of good innovative things to see and learn. Frankly, having the company name on resume can do you good for your next career.

The company has quite a good system recognise employees contributions and on-time deliveries. They pay OK money but you can expect no more than a half of inflation pay raise each year. The management team is very united and has strong relationship as they have been friends over a decades. They do know how to talk to people and literally, after a while, you will realise they do have a standard script dealing with different situations.

Unfortunately, contribution is not equal to promotion. Personality compatibility with senior management team is rather more important. Sweet talk is a must stepping up regardless contributions, performance, or opinions from team members explaining why there has always been such a high turning rate at the company.

I have been working at Thermofisher for the last 4.5 years.
When I started with the company it was a very good job but with management changes things went down hill very fast.
The staff turn over went through the roof in just a short space of time.

The management style was more of a bullying culture than a leadership style hence the large staff turn over.

The worst thing is that the management at higher levels just ignore 
cries from employees and just dismiss them and then they just work you out of the business.

These types of companies need to be held to task on how the do business.

Please remember this is only one small area of thermofisher so I cannot comment on the rest of the company in other countries.

Just Australia very bad keep away if you want to live a happy life.

The time management as it was  a very fast-paced job and you were an important person to make sure the people in the agar lab was able to get it out

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly, fast paced, need to be a fast learner 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Come into work, have a start of shift run down of the current shifts day, check plates, refill plate trolleys, check bloods and other equipment replenish if needed, go into packing room, help run a agar line, then once conveyer is full go into cold room and stack pallet and repeat

They employ lots of people with PhDs and the like who can't read or write English or communicate effectively. They also employ useless staff who avoid work or who are incompetent.
Often under resourced and learning is by the seat of your pants - if you don't get it, you'll drown! Poor systems don't support the business and processes lead to mistakes and team unrest.
Management only care about quarterly revenue and are not interested in the people unless you are a suck-hole.

A typical day at work includes managing a team of 22 people, working in a manufacturing environment.

I am qualified to train, coach and teach continuous improvement methodology by analyzing data using different data analysis tools,identifying root cause and implementing solutions.

I work with a divers team will varied skill sets, implementing training structures and creating standard operating procedures (SOP)

I use continuous improvement on a daily basis to identify issues and solutions.

12-hour shifts and everyday things changed but not always for the good. I can only speak about them during the end ish of Covid and the contract we all signed up to.  As a new batch of staff started it just seemed like a shambles. Every day something would change in the way we worked or the procedure would change. Never really got settled into any routine and the Management had their favs, they got the good jobs. Summing up shambles most of the time but think it might have been a decent place to work but not for me.


Can not stand it, am looking to get out.
Horrible place to work. The culture is shocking, they talk about work life balance, but in truth, does not exist in this company. Keep very far away, in particular avoid the EIP group. This ship is sinking, and fast. No clear direction from management, particularly senior, it’s rife with bullying, threats, there is no motivation. They are severely under resourced; yet more and more is expected. The place is cancer. Avoid.
