A typical Day at work would be to make sure product prices are current and updated, self review of slow moving stock, make sure all products are on display. Having good Customer Service and producing the right knowledge to customer requests.

I learned how to be pro-active, have new product knowledge, how to deal with customers when selling. Making sure there is value with each sale made.

Management is very much business focused, they don't recognize staff members needs, lack of people skills when communicating with staff.

Co-workers are very much under pressure from their own sale targets. Unable to help each other out as a Team, will only perform or assist someone if it benefits themselves.

Hardest part of the job would include serving customers are various departments in the shop. Dealing with issues and selling at the same time (multitasking). Having insufficient staff puts more pressure on individual salesperson. Creates a non-motivated working environment.

Enjoyable part would be attending product training and launches, end of year social club staff outing.

If it was possible to give less than a star I would. Between the lack of support from head office. Idiotic upper management detached from the reality of their customers and what they are forcing on staff in regards to unrealistic KPI’s and expectations. It’s clear this company is about profits for its nest egg shareholders and bonuses for higher ups  at the expensive of the mental health of their staff. In addition to secretly removing their sales incentive program, they have then gone and changed the commission payment structure effectively further removing incentive for staff to hit their sales targets. Again doing it sneakily and not advising the staff this was happening. It was once upon a time a good place to work but it’s now clear it’s driven by corporate greed and not worth being here any more. Constant employee surveys getting ignored and results not shared just being done to make it look like something is being done and they care about us when everyone can see through the facade. No wonder the exodus of long term staff has been so high. Never been clearer that you’re a number and that’s it. Won’t be a place I will miss working at. Resignation will be coming soon.

As a salesperson, customer interaction is a must. And for me, is the best part of the job. Helping customers to find their wanted items and informing them on all they need to know. It's honestly the best part of the job. I've learnt so much, mainly about my area in which I work in which is the Techzone, where you'll find the computers, phones, tablets and whatnot. I've also learnt the best forms of interaction between a customer and myself. Management there is lacking. Only two in particular of the three aren't very engaging. But the main management is one that puts in the most helping hand. Overall, the job can be a little on the uninteresting side as weekdays are the least busy, but is at its best when a customer does come by seeking for help. To sum it up, it's a wonderful job with a fair amount of lovely staff, but sometimes fairly uncoordinated events and lacking management, as well as poor listing of new shifts due to bad spending.

Working at the GoodGuys was a lot of fun and has a family feel within all of the staff.
Retail consist of Customer Relations, Merchandising, Housekeeping and Time Management.
Whilst in this position my Manager promoted me to "Buyer" which entailed ordering all of the stock for the Small Goods section and also contacting suppliers to chase up any outstanding purchase orders for the whole store.
Once a year I would fly to Brisbane to attend a function held to view all of the newest products being released for Christmas and have the chance to order these products.
Both Management and Co-workers treated each other with mutual respect and like family.
The hardest part of the job and like any Retail business was the hours spent away from my family on Public Holidays and School Holidays. The GoodGuys would be flexible where they could be.
The most enjoyable part of my job was being in the public and helping customers meet their needs.

The job itself could be quite fulfilling and wholesome; the ability to help customers find what they need while attaining sales KPI's.

However management is next to non-existent both in the store and in corporate.

This therefore ties into my main concern and issue; KPI's and commission based selling is not as "accessible" to all staff (in particular new).

Staff members that have been there for several years get away with doing nothing but selling high ticket items and NOTHING ELSE!
This means no phone calls, no complaints, no stock refilling, no ticket repricing etc.
This is all left to the new staff or staff that are more easily approachable.

Now management could get involved and "MANAGE" said staff members, however this is not the case. This "boys club" mentality is a far out-dated principle that needs to be addressed asap.

This aside, the salary is a complete joke.
Employees on $22 p/h; this includes admin, warehouse or sales.
(keeping in mind; yes, only sales team-members can earn commission)

Definitely would not recommend!!

while working at the good guys I learnt a lot about time management and dealing with upset customers , I dealt with a lot of warranty's  and testing faulty product. The work place was a fast past , but fun environment to work in. it taught me a lot about keeping an eye on deadlines and completing warranty jobs from start to finish on time to keep the customer happy. I made a lot of phone calls with different companies to come up with a solution with them how we can have products fixed/ordered on time. The most hardest part of my job was training new employees while I had filled in for the admin manager while she was on leave. I worked 6 days a week and completed all jobs that where assigned to me, I did enjoy every minute of it but it did challenge me. The most enjoyable part of my job was keeping my manager happy by taking control of situations and coming up with solutions on my own.

When I started working there it was great, but one by one the people who made work enjoyable started leaving, and I couldn't blame them. The store in general is messy and unorganised when it comes to stock and displays, which leads to impatient customers and annoyed managers. Some of my colleagues would swipe sales under my nose, but then never do any cleaning or merchandising and leave that to the casual workers, further weakening their chance of making their weekly targets. Shifts would be taken away or added at the last minute, where I would either not have a shift for weeks or would work almost every day for a month. The store is in an odd location meaning you will not be getting many customers, and therefore will not likely make your target. Managers would try to be nice and reasonable, but they can only do so much, and come off as quite two-faced.

you are practically required to know everything in customers eyes. everyone in that works there is always angry which i cant blame but it is reflected onto everyone especially when managers are the ones that are angry, makes everyone feel like awful. overall the only benefit in the end was the staff discounts everything else was stupid, having to work for commission just to make a paycheck especially when we live in a world where buying things instore is becoming less and more online which you get nothing for and when people don't buy from you because the price is too high and you cant lower it because you wont get payed the extra money that you need to make the average pay of a normal worker. Its given a lot of work experience that will go unnoticed to any employer you go to after unless they have worked there before they wont know the pain nor how much you are responsible for.

Constant revolving door of incompetent and condescending managers that cause more problems than they solve. Employees are only seen as numbers and management prefers keeping the bulk of them on casual contracts so they can cut their hours when their endless list of redundant and demotivating KPIs, which include but are certainly not limited to the number of sales against how many times the automatic doors open in a given day and the average number of items per transaction, are not being met. As such, there is little to no career progression offered within the organisation. Would be hard pressed to find a more depressing work environment, the apathetic outlook of a majority of the staff is testament to the toxic management structure. It's a miracle the Good Guys is still in business all things considered.

While the company is somewhat put together and colleagues/upper management pleasant enough, there is a distinct difference in how retail was 3+ years ago to now. Customers are the worst part of the job. Demands are getting more and more ridiculous in every area you can think of. People want the best for the smallest amount of money and work on their end. That will never change. But the degrading way they speak to you has definitely gotten worse of recent years. And everything becomes your fault, even when it is they who didn't listen when advised of something that will or will not work for them. Otherwise while the knowledge you're expected to learn across thousands of products (in your own time) is challenging, the work is decent enough for retail. The pay could be a lot better but at least commission helps in the busier periods. Would recommend for people who don't care about being happy.
