The Coffee Club

I joined this company in early 2018 and my last shift was near the end of that same year.

I chose the profession as a Cook since there was a very high turnover for this job (minimum of 1 per month).

My one-day probationary non-paid period was increased from 1.5 hours to 7.5 hours due to the franchise owner pressuring my willingness to *stay back and learn the kitchen*.

For the first month as a Cook, I was subjected to daily verbal abuse, ranging from not presenting food a certain way to not cooking over 10 meals within 3 minutes in total fast enough (during peak hours).

Staff (excluding the franchise owners) were nice, very easy-going and understanding. 

One of the seasoned Cooks had informed me during my stay at The Coffee Club that there used to be locals working at the Coffee Club that I was (at the time) working at before in the previous year but they all reported in the owners due to the verbal abuse and difficulties that they were put under hence why the owners decided to screen out most job applicants who were local.

The pay periods were a problem. Some weeks, you would get paid the following fortnight instead of the usual week.

One time, I was paid the weekday casual rate when I had only worked on the weekends and so instead of paying me the difference as most other companies would do, they demanded that I pay them the money back in full so they can pay me correctly.

After a week of waiting after I paid them back (and a couple of phone calls later), I had to mention the Fair Work Commission in order to be paid a minute later.

Then after that day, I received no more shifts from the company, with an owner informing me that the workplace was quiet (which was a lie).

If you can work at The Coffee Club fast paced, YOU CAN WORK ANY WHERE and be a gun at what you do. 
Great work environment, great team, friendly regular customers, a lot of cross training is provided so we are multi skilled, great store environment, understanding down to earth Managers. They are what make the store. Every regular customer, comes in to see one manager in particular everyday due to her being so welcoming and making them feel special each and everytime they come in. When she is not there on the weekend they say, they can feel the difference in the store and look forward to seeing her on the Monday.  She is what makes the Plenty Valley Store. 
We are provided with a lot of online training to help you adapt to The Coffee Club work standards. 
Daily coaching is provided so you work up to speed as required and you are constantly remind of the 6 steps of service. 
Without using the method LATTE and 6 steps of services you will not survive at The Coffee Club. 
We are coached daily until these methods become like a Coffee Club religion for us:) at first you think it’s full on!!! 
But once you understand the standards that’s required of us,   ITS A BREEZE and all thanks to the managers not giving up on us.  They say “it’s not rocket science what we do here anyone can do it! you just need to make it all become second nature and it will just be apart of your regular customer service skills “ Which is what has happened :) I now can work comfortably in any fast paced environment thanks to The Coffee Club Plenty Valley.

I was texted and asked to come in for a two hour trial. I had been looking for work for two months and agreed, showing up the next day to complete it. I was put straight to work; I had years of experience in hospitality and completed the two hours easily. They took my aside at the end and spoke to me about my availability (which was also noted on my resumé). I informed them again that I was studying an intense degree full time at university and availability would be a casual 1-3 shifts a week. They agreed. I completed one seven hour shift last week (with neither manager present) and left tired, but satisfied; little did I know it would my first and last shift... I sent my hours through last weekend for this week - I never received a roster. I emailed trying to follow the roster up and was ignored. Last night I received a no-reply email from the Coffee Club thanking me for my time and contribution - I had been fired with no explanation and no further contact. I tried to log into the Clubhouse to leave a review and was left with a notice that read “Your Manager has deactivated your account”. I was shocked. Today I saw that my pay has gone into my account but I did not receive a pay check. I was not paid for my trial and  received less than $100 (less than $15 an hour) for seven hours work (illegal for a 19-year-old) after being told I would receive $20 an hour. I cannot get through to any body I worked with. 

The other staff gossip, swear, do not follow hospitality protocol and are just plain unpleasant. The management is awful and strained. Do yourself a favour and save yourself the time and effort - just don’t apply.

When I still had my original boss, I'd have to say it was definately one of the best places to work. I wanted to work alot so they let me do 65 hour weeks (open till close nearly every day).
A normal day at work was usually always good, great staff to work with and great customers. I learnt alot more about coffee making than what I already knew. I also learnt about coffee machine maintenance when I was left waiting for and with the repair men after we had already closed one evening.
The hardest part of the job; i'd have to say would have been going home at the end of the day! Then i'd say doing the stock lists.
The most enjoyable part of the job would definately have been my team and customers. Especially when a regular customer could walk in and we'd already have their coffee ready. :)
Management was originally great, my manager helped me to get on my feet in my personal life aswel as work life. Then management changed, and I lost my job, along with 3 other excellent staff members AND our previous manager!
But before that, I've never been happier in a workplace. :)

Management really depends on where you work, mine was fine and enjoyable. 
HEAD OFFICE. I could write an endless review about this horrid franchise, 8 years I’ve put into this business and been paid the absolute minimum wage for a cook/chef role working 5 days a week. 
The constant emails harassing you about the hundreds of WHS and online training modules you have to complete and reset and complete again later on is rediculous! Everything, absolutely everything comes to down to how much head office is earning, they don’t listen to managers, staff members or even regular customers that keep their business running. If it’s not building their bank account it will be ignored. Make sure you’ve got food coming out in a presentable manner in under 2 minutes no matter how busy the period is, coffees must be perfect no matter what the rush, and they expect you to be able to make coffees, food and serve customers with 3 staff members, they have voiced this many many times directly to our managers who visibly are shocked to understand how a busy could run with 3 staff members at all, as was I.


I was hired as a cook at the Coffee Club Rousehill. At first I thought it was alright, did a couple orders during my trial and at the time it wasn't busy. Finally got hired, that when everything went down hill. The chef de partie/sous chef lacked delegation and the biggest thing that got me was that there was no systematic approach when we were doing orders. She tried to go on 20 orders at once, plenty with 5 or 8 dishes on each. Everything had to be done in 10 or 20 min no more. Eggs were cooked inconsistently, bread fallen off the toaster, burnt meat and I watched as one of the bread had fallen off the club sandwich onto the floor, picked up by the chef and served to the customers. Pancakes were store brought and scrambled egg microwaved and then reused time after time again. Now I am all for being fast and being able to multitask on different orders as I am an Apprentice Chef myself, however this was despicable. 


I highly recommend you avoid working at this place at all cost. Not only this is appalling, the owner were rude and when I told them of my anxiety that I had from my recent job. I was told they wouldn't have hired me if they had knew from the start.

yes, your job can be stressful and most of the time overwhelming, as any job would be, but The Coffee Clubs boss makes it 10x worse and is unbearable to the point where it makes you feel sad, and at most point depressed. it is a disgusting workplace and environment. 
with my whole experience with working at the Coffee Club, I have learned to take the rubbish out, do the dishes, and was taught 4 times to make cold drinks and I was expected to remember everything while only lasting 5 mins within each of those 4 times of being taught, I personally wouldn't call it being taught but that's what they called it.
the management is debatable, sometimes it's decent but other times it is terrible and unmanaged.
everything about the job is supposed to be simple and easy going but the boss makes it 10x harder and expects so much from you even though you are doing as your told and trying to make everyone happy while doing your job. he expects you to do 20 things at a time.
the only enjoyable part of the job is seeing the friends you have made within the workplace.

Coffee Club in Helensvale was very busy, we were always kept on our toes and constantly had something to do which I loved, as I thrive in having something to keep me busy throughout the day.
I learned how to make coffees, which I had never had the opportunity to do anywhere else before.
Managers were all very young, but the store itself was franchised by someone who nobody in the store liked, she treated them all very unfairly and started cutting down everyones hours out of nowhere.
I loved my co-workers we got along very well with each other and worked together well as a team.
The hardest part was keeping up with all the table clearing when I was the only person on the floor during rush as the owner didn't ever put enough people on.
The most enjoyable part of it was having the same people come in everyday and having people who loved coming for us and for the service we gave them.

Being a waitress especially in such a well-known restaurant such as the coffee club can be hard, typically in the early morning and Thursday-Sunday period (day and night). 

It can be a lot of pressure, making sure you're there at every bell call and taking the correct orders from customers, remembering the cutlery and the extras however it is rewarding in the sense that you get to meet and form relationships with lots of the regulars who in my case were more in the older bracket (I love the oldies and their stories). Other customers however can make your job very discouraging especially when youre being yelled at because their food is taking forever despite them being the 34th person to walk through doors on a saturday brunch. None of which you can help yet the blame will ALWAYS fall through to you (from the customers). Other than having to clean up after people and juggle for plates on 2 arms, its a great job.

Working at the coffee club was the most stressful horrible experience of any workplace I’ve been at, some staff were extremely rude and bossy for no reason and expected more of you than was possible, I was constantly over worked and stressed. Just about every shift was under staffed so you had to work extremely hard just to keep up. They expected you to complete many many hours of unpaid online training otherwise you wouldn’t be given shifts. To finally get my full uniform it took about 6 months of working there then I only got one T-shirt given to me. On my “dismissal” I wasn’t given any notice that I wasn’t working for them anymore and they treated me like I was never employed there. They blocked me out of the group chat, roster application and training application out of nowhere, after I had been working for them for around 9 months. Also on my last shift payment I was underpaid and it took me over 2 weeks of emailing to get my correct payment sorted out.
