Every area had different challenges because the requirements for the animals is ever changing. I had to be flexible and willing to get down, dirty and wet. The other staff members were very inviting and helpful, we all had the common goal of animal welfare. There was many enjoyable moments with seeing and helping handling various animals but the most difficult part was seeing an animal get euthanised. I enjoyed hearing baby animals calling out for food when I was in the area. Seeing the connection that the veterinarians/vet nurses really moved me and helped me decide my definite dream job.

My holidays have been eventful at the zoo I find the type of people that volunteer beside me are mostly engaging and thoughtful. 
There are not many complaints, some people I have encountered do not know how to control there arrogance toward others but they are an odd few (some yatz volunteers). The Coordinators had some issues with the management of the new scheduling system but luckily that error was dealt with when I went to the zoo.
But mostly It offers honestly what it can offer being a zoo for wildlife conservation.

A great way to make new contacts and begin your journey to work with animals but the retail management do not care about their staff. No appreciation given, constant hiring of new YOUNG staff as they are too naive to stand up for themselves when management takes advantage. 

When supervisors leave they are not replaced and casuals are expected to run the team.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Seeing the animals. that’s the only thing. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The managers. They really were the worst. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Hostile, stressful, rude. I felt like I only got the job to add to their diversity lol

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Open up, turn everything on, serve customers and make coffee, get yelled at occasionally for something stupid. Lock up. Go home.

Cleaning various marine mammals tanks including seals, sea lion and penguin enclosures. 

I learnt how to complete work to a strict deadline before opening times of the Zoo. 

Using equipment in a safe and control manner was essential to extend the length of time I could spend underwater to complete tasks. Keeping calm under pressure was very important, which I improved greatly during my time at the Zoo.

I was working at the switch board and we did several diffetent things. When it wasn't so bisy on the phones, I used to ask the finance department if they needed help and they appreciated the help we gave them. I was also invited to do a couple of behind the scenes tours with the keepers which was amazing. I fully enjoyed my time there.

Perfect work space for teenagers, they do classes and public work! you choose when your shifts are and if you can't make it you just remove you shift!

The workers and managers were lovely but they are hopeless with paying employees. Did not have my questions answered and was lied too every time I asked about my pay or the terms we agreed on. 
Extensive travel and they lie to the people they try make sign up to a "charity"

Have recently been inducted into the YATZ program at Taronga zoo as a volunteer.  So far I have had to learn to go on line and complete work roster using Doodle. Our induction group had a tour of the zoo and explained our duties.

A great volunteer opportunity to either further skills for future careers or just give back. 
The atmosphere is always enjoyable with division team members.
