Only do it if you're desperate... or, maybe if you secure a senior, permanent position... or, I hear astrophysics is nice?!

Unfortunately it seems, desperation to make up for long standing short-comings in practice, trying to keep up with the competition with a disproportionately strong focus on marketing, and rorting as many international students as possible in the process takes precedence over delivering a quality product and a valuable environment.

The computer network is terrible too. Often things wrong, and not enough support to fix it. Follow up to issues comes sometimes weeks later!! Although, I suspect that is a lack of management spending, not inadequately skilled support personnel.

However, I'm led to believe a lot of this and the cons aren't just Swinburne but rather Higher Education in Australia as a whole.

My Swinburne experience was a brief and unhappy one. The actual job did not match the position description or the selection criteria. A lot of extremely mindless administrative tasks were dumped on top of the tasks I was led to believe would be involved. Management did not seem to have a good understanding of the day to day tasks. Staff morale in my area (PAVE) was extremely low and there were numerous staff changes in the short time I was there. IT and other systems and processes around the university were appallingly unreliable and cumbersome. There were many student complaints about processes as well.

A day typically started with research in lecture and answer preparation.Putting material onto the computer for student access.Discussion with staff about the materials and any other matter..Delivery of material in the lecture room. Student consultation and tutorial participation and discussion of problems set.This was the most enjoyable part of the job.it was also in many ways the most difficult as not all students immediately grasp the concepts maybe language skills

Great place to work. Work smarter not harder, may seem a little impossible these days. I had the best time, we made sure we had a laugh almost everyday. It was a constant changing environment in a Facilities deparment, we would have a burst wate rmain to roof leaks, to break ins, to suspicious behaviou, andpower outages, all within an hour. So from the Reception, to CoOrdinator to Maintenance, Supervisor, Manager, Director. It can be all hands on deck within minutes. We were a very cohesive team, and led by some professional leaders. I sure miss my colleagues.

Typical day was answering student enquiries on phone and email. Job was really intense as they have a lot of students, but management does their best to ensure that you have adequate rest. Students can be abusive sometimes, and parents always call in to find information. However, student information must be kept confidential. Lunch times are staggered and usually alone as student HQ has to be always manned by someone. The hours are not too long, and pay is decent. There is opportunity to progress but may require consistency. Always remain polite and courteous

My Personal Review is, that Swinburne University was an excellent company to work for and the staff were very professional and helpful the facilities were of a very high standard.
The most enjoyable part of my Job was of-course Teaching my Students even though they could be a bit unruly at times I just put it down to youthfully exuberance.
I enjoyed the time that I spent with them and will miss them all.

As far as Management all I can say is that Swinburne Uni ran Automotive for over 70 years and now that is all finished !!!

Not a great place for long term. Managers have very less knowledge of Swinburne processes. You work hard in casual roles and they will not give you shifts saying they want to give equivalent shifts. But then after sometime you will again see some casual staff getting full shifts when they are new.
Better to move On from this place after getting some experience. Management got no principles at all. No use of working hard for them. 

A good place to learn for new start. Job security and good super. 
Swinburne is lean in staff strength and gets to pick up lots of new skills. Management is lean and colleagues are easy to work with. There is sporadic development program for staff and staff need to be proactive in learning. I had learnt much from the work and contribute much of the work for the years in the University. It is a interesting place for new graduates to begin career.

The PAVE mangeress blatently ignored the prescribed hurdles she set and that I was to assess student on so that the student pass rate would be higher into the tertiary level. This is opnly setting up the students to fail. It would be far better to have a stronger foundation for the students so they dont fail at the higher levels. Also far too many international students whose English writing made no sense on the exams I was marking.

Trying to see as many people who had questions as well as we could. Working as part of a team, helping each other. They made me feel like one of their own. Very supportive management. Some people would say its a stressful job, due to interacting with a number of different people who are frustrated.
