St John Ambulance

St John (NT) is a very busy mostly non-for-profit organisation made up of many departments who help to support the Volunteers out in the community.  The Ambulance Service is contracted by the NT Government to provide an emergency service to those in need. 

The organisation has provided me with an opportunity to grow professionally as I commenced as a Trainer and spent a number of years in Management positions. 

My colleagues on many levels are helpful, positive and work hard toward common goals at all time displaying a positive image of the organisations core values. 

The hardest part of my job was managing internal conflicts which arose between staff on occasions.

The most enjoyable part of my role is networking, leading, mentoring and travelling for work related meetings either interstate or intrastate

Fulfilling and rewarding work, matched my interests of altruism and my interest in the medical world.

There were one of two work days within St John, a weekly meeting, in which a group would gather to brush up on important first aid skills and bond as a team, or an event, in which the bonded team would stand by and aid those in need of medical attention. 

The co-workers were friendly altruistic and professional who were more than happy to help within the work place. 

The easiest and hardest parts of the job were both the people dealt with while some are helpful and understanding of the situation medical aids are under at all times some react abrasively and rudely to the first aiders present

I enjoyed doing my job but management is a disgrace. People culture is a joke. There's nowhere to grow and nobody seems to know what they're doing.
Lots of long term plans but nothing happens.
It's a place where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing: the volunteers don't know the staff in admin or the trainers, the trainers don't know the people in Community Care... people don't get any acknowledgment for doing their job well and management has their "favourites" and they don't even hide it.

I have had the opportunity to extend my learning and skills by completion of a Cert IV in TAE and studying a Diploma of Management.  I have also been involved in the creation of supplier agreements and other documents that have been adopted by the sales team.  The most enjoyable part of the job is detailing clients about First Aid, most clients value First Aid and our brand.  The challenge is for this not-for-profit organisation to go forward and compete on a commercial platform, really set themselves apart, not just rely on the strength of brand and long-held reputation.

Attend emergency and non emergency call outs to provide pre hospital care to members of the public as well as providing patient transport between Bunbury hospitals and Donnybrook hospital. The people that I volunteered with were great to work with as they were all very nice and caring. The best part of the job was getting to help people in the local community in times when they really needed it. There was no bad part to the job in my opinion. The sub-centre's management was really good but the state management side of things was pretty slack in my opinion.

Each day is very similar because of procedures and protocol laid out by the company.
I learned a lot about receiving inwards goods, and following procedures for incoming and outgoing goods.
Management was understanding and very co-operative with the warehouse staff.
Work culture wasn't good at first but progressive motivation, team work and educational activities changed all that.
I won't consider any hardest part of the job because I know and understand my daily job.
The most enjoyable part of the job was, when daily tasks were completed satisfactorily.

Loved working for SJA, yes it was stressful at times but this was okay to deal with because there were lots of times that it was fun.  The people that work for SJA are generally great - friendly, supportive and fun.  The opportunities were amazing, I got to do things that lots of people would never get to do.  Or you can just work as a metro Ambulance Paramedic if you don't like too much change or circumstances dictate that.  

Fun work place with supportive management. Not all about the numbers but how you personally grow and develop. Decent amount of red tape and politics, but this is expected of a big company. The most enjoyable part of the job was working alongside my colleagues and learning from them. The office started to get crowded as the company grew and it was more difficult to get to know the new people. There was a lot of variety in what I did each day, ranging from the monotonous tasks to new projects that were challenging and exciting.

Lack of support with lethargic response from management.  Issues left unresolved.  No chain of command and no respect for line managers.  No progression of complaints as no one seems to want to resolve them. Training standards questionable for an organization who prides themselves on such high standards delivering first aid.  Trainers have to be self reliant as they receive very little support from management.  Resources are old and questionably maintained.

If you are not on the edge of a mental breakdown then your not being stressed out enough.
Horrible place to work.  Brought up safety concerns,  which were ignored until I took it to the hr or the health and safety department, then was treated like I had done something wrong for trying to keep the workplace safe. Management ignored me when I mentioned an on going injury until I refused to work until the issue was resolved. Smartest decision I made was to leave the place.
