Absolutely hands down the worst company I have ever worked with and experienced in my career. Terrible bullying tactics used by all above Store Management level with no care or empathy for those below them. They are somehow not held accountable for their actions and everything they do seems to magically go unnoticed... (Hmm, odd..) - QLD has the lowest Team Member, Management and Upper Management retention rate across the nation and it is no wonder with the "People and Culture" Manager at the helm.. (steering the state into oblivion one terrible hire at a time..) Training plans for new Team Members (or any potential, er, 'victims') are haphazard at best, with no follow up. They've got Inexperienced "know it alls" leading the state from "Area Manager" roles (who, surprise surprise had a huge lack of training.. seeing a pattern here?) who don't quite understand the concept of answering that thing in their pocket that rings... and rings... and rings.. and rings.... or checking that pesky outlook app on their laptop that dings... and dings... and dings... Er, communication anyone? Not a concept this company have quite mastered yet (and they even admit to it..) 

You want stability and support? Look elsewhere. They wouldn't know whether they're Arthur or Martha on a good day. They make up their own rules as they go along and then bully you all into them like they're herding cattle into the Hurty House - and don't even think about "mooing" whilst you're getting herded, or you'll be taken straight to the place we don't speak of (aka the Ivory Tower) and read your last rights, or, if you've caught them on a good day (you'll never know, it's a lucky dip) placed in the unruly pen and marked as "proceed with caution" and your work life will be absolutely made to feel like you're getting attacked from all possible angles - Sounds really good, eh? 

TLDR: Approach with caution, actually.. Don't approach.

From the beginning they were slack with communication, I had to chase everything up after I had my interview. Started off with decent hours, manager of the store I was in didn't like training new people and so I received minimal training which then led to that store palming me off into another store to 'fill' in for someone else however ended up being kept there and only got 1 rostered shift a week between 3-5 hours. They will cut your hours but then hire a heap of new people. New store spoke about training me up properly so I could carry out all tasks however that never happened plus they couldnt even be bothered to show me where the bins were located in the shopping centre but then gave me a written warning when I failed to take the rubbish out.
There is apparently a policy where family members cannot work together however the store I got moved from hired one of the ladies children and they still work together to this day. 
The girls are all really good friends outside of work so be prepared for favortism. If you work in Rockingham, one of the ladies has absolutely no respect and will degrade you in front of customers and fellow employees which no one does anything about.
Manager of another store gets the casual girl to pass on her messages to me regarding jobs I never done properly instead of approaching me herself.

I really enjoyed the job when I was left in the store by myself and I made a couple of friends out of it so that's probably the most positive thing about the job.

I cannot stress enough how terrible of an environment Smokemart and Giftbox is to work at! Do yourself a favour and do not apply, unless you are truely desperate.
Management here is horrendous, I have worked in retail for years at several different companies and never have I ever been made to feel as terrible as I did here. They treat all their staff with disdain, and make them feel incompetent. The daily/weekly sales targets are completely ridiculous and every staff member will be raked across the coals and insulted when they inevitably do not meant them. 
I’m have been made to cry on multiple occasions by management (as have all the girls I worked in store with). Any effort you put in will never be enough, you will receive no encouragement what so ever. You will only be paid for your rostered hours not the hours you physically work, you will be expected to get to store 15 minutes early every day and stay an minimum of 20 minutes late and will not be paid for it, however if you are more than 1 minute late your pay will be deducted. 

Never have I work somewhere where the staff turnover rate is so high. The customers are really the only good thing about this place, regular customers can be the only decent thing in your day. But also prepare to be yelled at, spat at, have things thrown at you on any given day, familiarise yourself with your shopping centres security number because some of the customers are horrible.

Company does not care about your health or mental health, they just want to chew you up and spit you out if you don’t want to work under their conditions. 
Which means working under staffed, in poor conditions, extremely long days, most days you are expected to work from open to close by yourself due to the company running the business short staffed to cut costs. 
In that time you are expected to get everything done, banking, orders, serving customers, cleaning, stocking up, merchandising ect. 
Or if you are not working the 10 hour days, you will be given bare minimum hours and be bounced from store to store.  Bare minimum training. 
Expect constant IT issues, if anything does happen with the equipment or computer systems, you are expected to perform the job of setting up printers, wifi, computer systems ect. 
If you are one minute late opening, expect to get a phone call and be told off by the area manager about. 
Very poor communication and very little support. 
You are better off being unemployed. 


Absolutely hated working for this company. Turnover is high. Management are bullies who do very little work. You're expected to do shifts when you're sick, have to go to a loved ones funeral, or when you've just had surgery. The Covid pandemic really demonstrated how corrupt the company is. Expectations and timeframes are completely unreasonable (eg: you must scan in tobacco within 30 minutes, even if it's busy and you're working on your own). There is blatant favoritism. 

Part of my job was to sell wholesale tobacco to other businesses whilst simultaneously documenting anything to authorities. This, to me, seemed highly immoral because I was instructed to help businesses whilst reporting them. These were mostly family-run businesses that might've missed some signage or who sold under-the-counter products.

I cannot emphasize enough how you should avoid this company.

Management is very vague and frankly not helpful. In my time I did not feel like I had anyone to go to about my management, nor did I feel like anyone had my back. Time and time again, things that were not my fault fell back on me, complaints I had about other team members and management went unanswered. Safety issues at work and where I worked were never considered. It’s a good job for 3 months or so, but I would have never worked here if I could have helped it. I got so depressed working here that I had to go on antidepressants for the first time in my life. 

Good luck if you need time off, if a casual can’t do your shift you have to still go. I’ve had to work so I’ll I couldn’t stand and I’ve had no help from the managers. If you are management, you’re expected to fill shifts at any time, even if it’s known you are off for a certain amount of time. Casuals don’t get reprimanded for their mistakes. 



Worked many hours overtime to meet upper managements ridiculous expectations, never got paid. Bare minimum wage. Expect no support from upper management, they prefer to stand around smoking and talking smack about other people in the company than actually doing their jobs. Expect you to run a store as well as working in their warehouse without any staff support. Feels like highschool again with all the gossiping and drama, even at the conference its a fight to see who can brown nose the bosses quicker. If you either dont smoke or dont flirt with upper management you wont go anywhere or get used and abused until you crack then youre made to look like the crazy one. Staff turn around is one of the worst in the industry, they employ under qualified and promote people that around suited to that position then wonder why people keep leaving.

Smokemart was a fantastic place to work, I loved most of the duties and the type of stock we had. Staff were always nice and chatty and always up for a laugh. The downside was the pressure of poor management from the store manager and upper management, most times disorganised, they weren’t too worried about knowing their staff more so just doing your job. I had solid hours, 3/4 shifts a week, though sometimes it could drop down to 2 or so. Time off/sick days were another issue, you were always made to feel like a burden if you were unwell or had something come up to which you couldn’t work. As for leisure activities/holidays, you had to write it down in a book at least 2/3 months ahead of time. I’d lost a family member on a day I had to work and wasn’t even able to have the day off, was made to work as a complete emotional mess.

Absolutely shocking worked there for a few months, wasn’t told about wholesale cold calling and canvassing for new clients, use of personal mobile phone for wholesale customer orders even though your told you cannot use your phone at work!!! 
What the company policy says and what they do are 2 different things. 
Store manager is also a sales rep job. 
No paid overtime if a staff member can’t cover the shift you need to with no extra pay even though the agreement says they will they will not! 
No support left alone to do the lot! 
Very unorganised and not supportive environment not advertising correct job description. 
Be prepared to be on call on days off and holidays to do rosters and get tobacco orders and pass them on to the store!!! 
Worked here for a few months and then left would rather be poor than work here!!!

Higher management are terrible. Worst communication skills I have ever seen in a company/business. Hours for casuals are just non existent because they keep restricting the hours that is the budget to put staff on. For example a shop has 79.5 hours, while a majority of hours go to management and 2IC, you'd be lucky if you got 5 hours a week as casual based on that. If you have a good team, get along well and find yourself wanting to be there great, but otherwise it's a real toxic enviroment that I wouldn't probably recommend. It's a job at best. Not somewhere where I would want to waste my life and time doing maximum amount of hours possible, which is hardly any, pay reasonable but nowhere near enough, and not be appreciated for doing what I do for the company.
