Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts

I was very honored to hold this internship during my study abroad experience.  I worked directly under the HR Director as a Quality Improvement Intern.  

I would work 10hr shifts where I would observe different departments of the hotel that were lacking in customer reviews.  Once I arrived on site for my shift I would meet with the HR Director to get an overview of the department I would be observing that day.  The Director would give me papers on the Standards of the Shangri-La and how things are suppose to be done within the department.  This help gave me a good understanding of what I was to be looking for.  

Once I was finished meeting with the HR Director I would proceed to the department I was assigned.  At the location, I would talk with the management and take note on their actions.  I would follow them around as another memeber of their department team getting a real feel for "A day in the life of..." From this I was able to anayzle different problems and be able to collect employee feedback on their suggestions to improve the department. 

The hardest part of this internship was to affectively write my observation report and make suggestions. I found that being detailed in my notes and focusing on how to improve the department rather than focusing on what was being done wrong helped in my report material.  

The most enjoyable part of the job was the people I worked with.  It was a very friendly envrioment and each department loved to teach you their daily tasks.

A quick debriefing of what would happen during the day was an every days start of.
I learnt on the importance of being neat ,punctual at work and following instructions from the supervisor.
The management was efficient and really educational ,they were always available to address complaints if any arose from the workers.
They ensured each n every individual was conversant with the policies and procedures of the workplace and frequently reviewed them.
The workplace cultural was simple and easy to learn the supervisors always ensured efficient training was key before one could start the job officially.
The hardest part of the job was dealing with occupied rooms .
The most enjoyable part of the job was the support offered by the more experienced colleagues.

Staff are really friendly and high management make it out like they want you to progress your career whilst there.
However when the time comes they hire externally in stead of internally.
Food and beverage is the best department to work for as they have more a good team morale and work together to achieve the same goal. Even the manager and directors really care for their staff and show them the recognition they deserve.

All in all if you need some to work so you can put food on the table this is the place.

Don't expect higher management to care

A typical day included cleaning rooms, mostly in the morning.  The  Shangri-La gave me good training in housekeeping, but after that they would sometimes give me too few rooms to clean, so my pay was low.  Sometimes management would accuse housekeepers of taking things from guests' rooms with no evidence.  These things were the hardest part of the job.  The most enjoyable part was working with my co-workers, who were very friendly and kind.

In the beginning of the week, I was struggling a lot due to lack of technical knowledge to the OPERA system . However, I have shown improvement in short period of time. My co-workers are all friendly and patient to teach me. 
I could not recall any hardest part of my job and I am later able to work independently.

I am a very bubbly girl and certainly have shown ability to build good relationship with colleagues within the department. So I really enjoy the working time with my colleagues and interact with other.

The work environment is great. Loved the team, people were awesome to work with. Got to meet different people from all over the world. Got to be involved. Chances of growing is high here, started as a floor staff then slowly moved to experience behind the bar making cocktails and hosting. Management at the time was good, there were things that could be better but from what was given and what we had, the manager did a pretty job. Would recommend working here :)

Supervisors and manager not trained in conflict resolution. HR neither. If you have an issue with a coworker and report it (quite likely, as some people from the housekeeping team are depressed and aggresive) they will turn against you for reporting. I understand why the housekeeping team is so sad and miserable, constantly complaining about the job even in front of clients

Shangri-la is the place will test your patience to guest who are so hard to please, but every time you full fileld their need you will feel happy and proud to your self. The manegment listen to their staff, they conduct a yearly employee servey, they give insentive if we reach our target budget for a month.

Of course five star hotel work environment is good and people are nice to work around. Greatly enjoyed working here. Only draw back is that I am not working in my field of study.

Whilst at the Shangri-La I was working in the banquets and also The Horizon Lounge (VIP Lounge). 

I was mainly working with the food and beverage sector or both departments. 

Shangri-La has a very multicultural and diverse team environment which gave me the opportunity to build relationships.
