SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

I have worked in a number of different team environments and as such I have been able to enhance my time management, organisational, planning and problems solving skills. I have gain and maintained my effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, as these qualities are one of my biggest assets. I gained other skills when I became an assessment writer at the Prison. 
During this period I have developed a sound knowledge and understanding of the reporting and assessments process, which is required in order to coordinate the effective Case Management of offenders. Some of my core daily functions within this role include, but are not limited to;
•	Perform initial assessment and security classification of offenders. 
•	Formulation of Individual Management Plans in collaboration with Case management. Coordinator and Operations Manager 
•	Development of Parole reporting obligations and provide recommendations to relevant releasing authorities. 
•	Allocation and completion of assessments tasks within the AIPR system compilation of requisite reporting requirements and agency referrals.
•	Assist Case Manager with weekly Case Conference in accordance with legislative requirements. 
•	Utilisation of departmental information systems.

I am a passionate person and a very hard worker. I have strong interpersonal skills, possess a happy and gregarious disposition, I thoroughly enjoy working with people, especially in the team environment.

The Centre I worked in is basically Indigenous and the main purpose is to encourage a change of mindset to reduce recidivism.  The Centre is small in comparison to other Centres in the City.  This being said, you have to work at multiple tasks which increases your skill set.  It was imperative to have a high level of organisational skills and to be able to priorities the work load to be able to complete all tasks within the required time frame.  

There were daily tasks which had to be done as well as tasks for updating files which you were in charge of and duty of care required these to be maintained and updated regularly.  Also there were many other tasks which came up during the day which had to be addressed immediately.  Safety of the inmates and the Centre as well as other Officers had to be maintained at all times.  Daily records had to be maintained in a manner admissible in a court of law in case of an incident or for reference by the senior staff.

The level of professionalism that the Department of Corrections is outstanding and it was easy to work with the Officers with this level of professionalism being maintained.  

Working in the Department of Corrections is working as part of a small team which is supported by the larger team.  Para-military order of command.  If you were not sure of something then all you had to do was ask and support was readily available.

The department is currently undergoing change management and learning to conduct business in a corporate world.    The legacies of the past, excesses in budget, poor fiscal management and unrealistic staff expectations can no longer be tolerated.

A more proactive mindset has to be the cornerstone of the departments future.  Public funds cannot be mismanaged, accordingly better service with a workforce embodied with drive, determination and a can do attitude is essential.

Public funded departments must become more self sufficient and develop shared responsibilities minus the burdens of bureaucratic red tape.

Prisons must be proactive into the future, devoid of previous negative culture

My day as Administrator to Manger Facilities Services would start by doing Credit Checks on all the trades people that we will need to go on our Prison site across New Zealand.  So I would make sure that they had complete the form correctly and then I would photocopy every single one and then send the original off to the Department of Justice and wait for 3 days to get a reply.  I would normally get anywhere from 20 to 150 a day that I would need to do.  Once I had got all the information back from Department of Justice I would need to enter every single one into a database and then send the reports out to each Prison advising them if that person was allowed on site.

I love my job, it is working with offenders and addressing family and domestic violence.  It is good to see the clients take on board some of the information that we deliver and advise us that they have made changes in their lives.

I work in a team and we keep each other informed of where we are at with our cases, so as to be able to advise others at any time about any client.

I get to work early in the morning because I believe it is the best time to start work.  My work ethic is very good, I am always on time for appointments and believe it is best to arrive up to 10 minutes early.

Working in a prison is not for everyone, after nearly 20 years I thought I had had enough so decided to leave after so long. My promotion was quite good I got to as high as you could go in uniform to Senior Officer with three stars on each shoulder. A good work and life balance with a great roster, the people I worked with were good and we all worked well as a team. Management on the other hand were not quite so good as I would or others would have liked, so the hardest part of the job was dealing with management. Most enjoyable working with some great people

The only fun found was at my workplace. I had a space for coffee and tea where I invited colleagues, especially at 10 am for morning tea and we chat. Otherwise the whole office was more of military domain. I enjoyed working for a manager who was very much my age group and stole a lot of ideas from him. The hardest part of the job was getting information from colleagues who did not provide enough detail and sometimes I had to use authority from my manager to get information.

I found each day was challenging, I had good working relationships with my co-workers & detainees. The work was varied with combination general domestics & supervision of the detainees.
End of shift meetings were held to pass on information for the incoming shift. Hardest part was dealing with  a juvenile that had received cell placement as a consequence.
The most enjoyable part was working through a shift where harmony & co-operation had prevailed.

I work in a maximum security prison. My responsibility is maintaining the care, custody and safety of my colleagues and prisoners in my care.  I am very supportive of my officers, I  work as a team with others I learnt  lots from my seniors who had been in the job for many years of service. From time to time the job is very challenging when the prisoners are misbehaving. Then I manage them in a humane manner. I enjoyed the job as I love interacting with officers and prisoners.

Has been a satisfying job helping the community and change the directions of people and have I've made a difference 2 the lives. Have the opportunity to learn how to approach people on the business level and safety concerns and being part of a safety panel learn a lot about WorkSafe and how to do jsa's for preparing to start the day of work. Had to learn to do cost of cutting & repairs on machinery. Learnt a lot about different cultures how to treat people whilst they were under my supervisor
