Unfortunately my last position with Queensland health was not a comfortable one. Although I worked within a group of 20+ staff, my section was just myself as the staff positions were reduced from 2 to 1. I was responsible for all operations of an extremely busy clinic of 4 doctors, 10 clinics/week, 2 patients/15 minutes that handled the medical care for staff (7,000+) at Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital Brisbane, as well as immunization. Duties everyday included set-up doctor's clinic/rooms/rosters/meetings; chart retrieval/dispatch/filing; reception - answer phone calls, telephone/in person bookings/cancellations, receive/depart patients, answer queries; settle/mediate complaints. Initially there was a lot of abuse from some patients (who could not be seen) but there were also some really lovely ones to compensate. I had walked into a run down disorganized clinic at the busiest time for the year, with the immunization clinic just started. But I turned it around and had it running very smoothly with no abuse. I did this by fine-tuning the systems and implementing more effective and efficient processes which were highly pleasing to staff patients. I learnt to hone my skills at handling abuse, time management, being able to priotize multiple priorites and still work in an effective professional manner. Whilst the group I was in were great to work with, the outside management wasn't, thus causing us to bond to endure. When the unit was cut, as part of the Government cuts, my position was also cut.

I worked at the RBWH for over a decade and, in that time, I saw the quality of nursing, medical and allied health care skyrocket. It was an absolute pleasure to work in a friendly, respectful and egalitarian work culture full of diversity and, dare I say, fun. I loved it immensely.. and the quality of patient care was, on the whole, very good. but, Alas, as one ages, the adrenals become worn out (!) with prolonged intensity.. and shift work also takes its toll. In short, my aging body said it was time to leave! But.. would I recommend it as a workplace to experience. Absolutely!! Give it a go..

My time at Royal Brisbane Hospital was a learning time for me. I was part of a small team working shifts at reception desk for Cancer Care. I did appointments for radiation treatment, for doctors and allied health as well. I greeted all the patients before their treatments, which was very rewarding for me - most patients had ongoing treatment for 4-7 weeks. I filed, put charts away at the end of a shift, used a variety of computer programs.

Working with the colleagues who  have a genuine care for their patients

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Bullying and poor work culture

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Variable. Some colleagues are patient focused and experienced and wise. The culture is inherently poor with a huge lack of support from ‘senior’ staff.

Volunteering at the Royal Brisbane and women’s hospital was great because I have wanted to work in the health industry since I was young. I learnt about different patients and the different areas of the hospital. I also learnt about what happens behind the scenes in a hospital which was very interesting. I would recommend volunteering at the RBWH for any student looking to complete their Cert 2 in Active Volunteering

I love my workmates, but the coordinators I work under lack the people skills required to be effective leaders. They talk without respect and make you feel stupid for asking a question. You'll rarely feel appreciated for the hard work you put in. It doesn't matter if you go hard or do very little, they simply do not care. They only care when you make a mistake. 

It's a shame because otherwise the people here are lovely to work with. This is my only complaint.

I learned to work with other people and got to experience busy hours of work and the environment was pleasing to work in. This was a hospital so it had so many science departments that where interesting to visit.

My opinion of work is that it is straight forward environment. You learn something new everyday, even if its not within your department. You meet new people and really see the behind the scenes action within the hospital.

Enjoyed my time working at the hospital meeting people and assisting patients with the tv rental needs.

Walked around the wards and spoke to new patients and offered the Tv rental service.

Collect money for account payment.

As Assistant Nurse delegated by the midwife at Birth Suite I'm doing rotating shift rain or shine. On time to work time management and followed the Workplace Health and Safety for the patients and staff. I enjoyed being a nurse.
