Managing a team of technicians in repair, servicing and preparing aircraft for flight, ensuring that work place safety requlrements are met along with the welfare of workers. Ensuring mentored training and recording of results is carried out along with dsisipline and integrety and ensuring that morale is maintained. Ensuring standards are met and maintained and personnel are trained and qualified and their personal requirements are considered outside of work requirements.
What I have learned is my own limitations and qualifications along with my workers as to achieve positive results also in unseen circumstances and during crisis management situations and to treat people fairly and without discrimination and resolve conflict with resolution.
Management involves all of the above plus keeping superiors advised on progress, problems and solutions as well as informing workforce of job requirements of organisation.
My co workers were from all age groups and denominations and sex and they responded to encouragement and direction with feedback to achieve harmony and results without compromising integrity and safety of fellow workers and equipment while maintaining high standards in the workplace. Happy and harmonious workplaces achieve best results specially if people are unafraid to speak up and communicate with each other.
The hardest part of the job was not being able to please everybody and achieve suitable outcomes.
The most enjoyable part of the job was to see people step up to the mark and help achieve jobs well done and for everybody to reap the rewards.

Great for school leavers and a career in your teens to late 20’s. Good salary, get paid to learn, and play sport. BUT the workplace is toxic. Promotions are slow and all dependent on being in the right place at the right time (luck) I.e. your supervisor, posted unit, base, platform/capability. People are toxic, like a high school you have the purple circle (cool groups). If you don’t fit in the “cool club”, you will have a hard time. Toxic culture, work trips are wild with a lack of professionalism, drinking, college like parties, unreported unacceptable behaviours. Where if you do report it, they will oust you from the group and you will be punished. Sometimes it feels like a circus, and it’s playing pretend, not a real business. Things only happen when they need to happen at last second. A lot of the time you won’t know why, you are expected to follow at all times. 

It’s a good career whilst you are young. Enjoyable for school leavers, who like drinking, being in a circus and not respected. But the lack of professionalism and progression makes it not a career for life… 

A normal days work on the flightline at RAAF Base Edinburgh in Adelaide starts at 0700 and generally finished at 1700 hours.  I was the Unit Training Co-ordinator (UTC) for 180 personnel, ensuring that all members were trained to a degree that they could perform maintenance on Orion Aircraft in a professional manner.  I organised specific courses for Engine, Airframe, Armament and Avionics personnel. 
I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the UTC's position, and would be in charge of the Flightline during nightshift, weekends and away-base operations.  This included both operations within Australia as well as overseas operations.
I took great pride in the duties and responsibilities as a member of Australia's Defence Force.

Overall I only really have good things to say about the RAAF, it provided great friendships, adventures and deployments. Sadly after a number of years service it was time to move on, this was mainly due for family stability and now being able to settle in one area and stay if we so choose, also I had spent 2 of the last 3 years deployed with a similar outlook for the next 3 years. I would recommend joining the RAAF to anyone starting out, as it provides all of the above plus training.

Defence provided me with the opportunity to challenge myself whilst serving Australia both here and overseas.  
The challenges are the many demands that are made upon service personnel in maintaining flexibility and high performance in your duties.  A willingness to serve anywhere, including overseas and at short notice is essential.  Defence demands a strong commitment to a positive culture and respect for others.  I am proud to have served my country.

I joined  the raaf because they were supposed to be the elite to help people and work hard but in my experience it's just a bunch of average people finding ways to make themselves either look busy or important

More dodgy people than your local pub. Back stabbing rife. Slow advancement unless you're a brown nose and cuddle up to your nco. Buerocratic nightmare. Your just a number and a surname. Doesn't prepare you for civilian life. Could care less what happens to you once you have done. Avoid. Find a proper job.

It’s a great place to work for young people but for those looking for progression and pay commensurate with civilian companies, this probably isn’t the place for you.

Defense culture and a really good experience. Great benefits and ongoing for DVA with any injuries from being when in the service. Overall the best for a benefit style lifetime career of learning.

I loved working at the RAAF base, it was such an amazing place, but the people that worked there were not to great, they were rude, bullying and very hard to impress people
