Depending on position and placement within the company its hard to describe a typical day and considering I have not worked for them in close to 3 years its hard to determine exactly what would be expected. Typically its as per your organised shift, however expect to always to be challenged with a fast paced moving company full of surprises, that being trains break down or nature or obstructions will emerge and it will bring your communication skills to the test and your ability to keep calm.

The great thing is you will alway be learning and paid to learn and the company is constantly changing and evolving some for the better some for the worse. 

Management is great and but as every company a few bad apples you will figure them out eventually. 

The Culture is centred on safety and its nice to know that you are being provided a safe work place, however do not point out the 
non compliance. 

The hardest part will be accepting even though your right its like having a relationship its best to just let it slide. Take that as advice.

The most enjoyable part is to come to work with an organisaation that is getting organised for the better and as plus  they do recruit amazing people from all walks of life and really this is the highlight if you can handle being friends with your co workers.

Last but least, Reach for the Stars and apply and apply and apply and eventually you will find the opportunities and most of all create genuine relationships with these amazing people and doors will open to your surprise. 

Be wise to never complain unless you are related to someone or have good relationships with HR.

Look, we all have our views of QR. Most of them are flavoured by the press and public opinion. However, QR can be great; if you are prepared to make it great. 
Here are a few things to remember.
1. Most people who work there are outstanding professionals who love what they do. 
2. You can get involved in lots of cool projects.
3. If you are good you can influence your team and get great outcomes.
4. If you listen and work hard you will get better at your job and be a more accomplished professional.
5. There are some not totally committed and not so good people and managers at QR. But that is the same at every workplace.
6. It is a bit of a slow mover organisationally. Don't expect to change things overnight, but that is the negative of working for one of the most highly scrutinised government agencies in the state. 
7. Say what you will about the Union movement, but if you are an award level employee your job is safe, your pay is outstanding and your conditions are attractive. (And don't give me that garbage that the Unions are responsible for QR's inefficiencies or run the place - Union membership is actually really low. It is interfering Ministers, poor managers and an insatiable media that leads to QR's bad decisions and irregular failings because (see point 1) most people who work at QR are good at their jobs).
8. Your goal each day is very clear. Help people travel to work on a train. Simple goal. Easily measured. Success can be achieved. 
9. You can find a niche at QR - A team, a role, a speciality and spend the rest of your career in that place becoming awesome at what you do and enjoying your working life.

I applied for a customer service role and the interview process was projected to take 2 months, from May to July. No worries, I want in a hurry. 

The first interview was with a group of fellow applicants for an info session that provided me with zero information, a short math test, and a 5 minute interview that was so vague I still can't understand what the point of it was. 

A month after that I was invited to attend a panel interview. This was successful and I received very positive feedback. My referees were subsequently contacted and I again received positive feedback. I was then asked to order my own police check, which was annoying as they are $50 and I didn't have the job yet. 

3 weeks after that, I received an email at 9.53pm on a Sunday night advising me that I was unsuccessful. Bizarre to receive an email of that nature outside business hours after I'd been made to think I was in with a good shot at the role. 

I replied to thanks them for considering me, and asked if any feedback could be provided. I have not heard back, and don't expect to. 

This saga has proven to me that QR really is just as incompetent as I suspected, and the pathetic train service might just be the tip of the inefficient iceberg.

A typical day at work would start off with a work and site briefing. As well as a site safety briefing. Then the preparation of foundations followed by the construction of sections of rail and sleepers. In my position in the railway I was educated in the process of training fellow workers how to use machinery correctly as in maintenance and operation. I learned how to follow procedures set out by management as well as many other skills. Being the Health and Safety Rep gave me the opportunity to work hand in hand with management to make the job as a trackworker not only safer but more productive. Working in a track production gang gives you a different perspective compared other types of jobs due to the fact you work as a team the better you all get along the more enjoyable it is to go to work. The hardest part of the job when working on the rail corridor would be the heat when it is the middle of summer. The most enjoyable part of this job was seeing the tasks completed and to know you had something to with this railway line is that it would more than likely still be there for years to come.

I enjoyed working with the staff, the customers, the management and all external contacts and the responsibility of the logistics to run the train on time and supply excellent customer service throughout each long distance journey that I travelled in the past 8 years.

I learnt that I was capable of providing my skills in several areas including fixing anything broken on a moving train and to liaise with control and maintenance and operational staff of the corrective actions required upon arrival at stations along the way and finally the destination.

Unfortunately the best part of the job became the hardest to overcome for my family and was constantly being away as I was on relief for 7 years and this molehill became a mountain

                              Passenger Attendant
                              Senior Catering Attendant

I enjoyed my time at Queensland rail and have made many great friends.

My management team was extremely supportive and encourages learning new skills and different roles within the department. They always made time to say hello and catchup and generally make you feel welcome.
My former colleagues are awesome people whom make the workplace a fun and enjoyable place to be and I am still friends with many of them.
The downside is the extremely rigid rules and regulations in addition to the job being shift work which isn't for everyone.
Also, another downer are the psychometric tests that you have to pass in order to even get most jobs there.
All in all, Queensland rail is a great place to work if you can handle it but like I said, it isn't for everyone.

I currently work away 9/5 days. I have taken this role on as no one else was willing to volunteere for such a challenge and i have come to be succesful in this role and reliable. it has taught me to grow and mature and most importnaly the saftey aspect of working in a trade. i work with one other a majortiy of the time and we have become close freinds. the other part of the work period i spend with a large team of re-sleepering. i have learnt how to work in a team and i have also learnt many manners and approches on any one situation from all of the individuals. the hardest part of the job is not the job itself but being away from my family. however the most enjoyable part is travelinng the regional areas of queensland and becoming confident and proud in my work.

a typical day in this role was a varied work, as the role was to "run interference" for the established team preparing for hard deadlines.  Typically it was preparing firewall rules for SAP products, helping out with AD permissions, organising firewall rules, policy compiance, QR astandards copliance and a third party a security review for an Avaya switchboard installation.

I learned about TMG proxies and reverse proxies, and QR standards and policies.

My Co-workrs were busy and dedicated to meeting hard deadlines.

Hardest part was learning about QR, and the most enjoyable was meeting the hard deadlines.

Great place to work..... Mostly. Used to be a lot better back in the day. The colleagues are amazing and there is almost an over commitment to safety. QR knee jerks all it's safety standards off of past incidents so they're excessive.
Pay is good/amazing however management are trash. They promote people who have no interpersonal skills so you're left with cold unhelpful and rude managers that want to throw you under the bus at any chance. We got marked off on an attendance sheet at the start and end of our shifts like a child at school so yeah that's the type of managers they have. They Trust us with millions of dollars of infrastructure and the safeworking of the network but mark us off on a roll like children. 

disarm security alarm,take all fridge cold room temps in accordance to HACCP requirements and record on revelent sheets,check diary for comminications check use-by dates on all food and diary items,prepare morning set-up (turn on lights,fill dishwasher turn on all Baine-marie's required for the days trade,prep for any buffets for the day, start morning prep for front of house prepare food for gold class service,prep for next day.management very experienced ,fair crew.My co-workers- "great team' - funny,compassionate people.Always striving to deliver exceptional customer service.The hardest part of the day was meeting deadlines.Most enjoyable meeting those deadlines
