I was a manager.  Fairly easy job: put out stock, set schedule for staff, merchandised, general store up keep, and dealing with staff but my staff were really great so I had no headaches there.

Upper management will not listen to store managers.  1/2 the lights were burnt-out at my store and I begged them to buy more lights and I was ignored.  The store was dark and unwelcoming.

Prices Plus upper management didn't communicate.  I did my own thing, which was great, but could be frustrating for others.  This came with its headaches as well, obviously.

For example, I told them that my seasonal stock from last year was substantial (sent them pictures of the mountain of boxes I had).  I requested they didn't send any more as that season was starting AND I was losing my storage area.  They didn't listen, and I ended up not being able to receive stock for a while until I could ship back the product they sent.

Prices Plus sells questionable products - i.e. using other company's (like Disney's) IP on their packaging.

Hardest part of the job is getting upper management to help when you really really need it.  They stay out of the way - which is nice when your a manager - but they won't lift a finger when there's a problem - unless it drastically affects sales.

Best part of the job was the freedom to do what I wanted with the store.

Full disclosure: I was stood down shortly after Christmas (they had to make their xmas money!) for not getting vaccinated.  Exactly 3 months later I was fired via email, they couldn't even look me in the eye and do it.

If you live in NSW there is no chance of career advancement more than manager unless you move to QLD.  There's a bit of nepotism too, which is bound to make things harder (not a criticism, just a fact, the owner can hire his kids if he wants).

Overwhelming negative, toxic, disorganized, extremely stressful. Communication is low, expected to guess what was wanted and if you didn't get it right you are punished. Manager and upper management enjoy breaking your spirit.
Despite taking on extra responsibility well beyond my role, supporting other stores, recognition, respect, fair pay, equipment to do the role, was non existent.  this company does not treat their staff appopriately, store manager doesn't know how to do her job and blames everyone else for her mistakes whilst being toxic with upper management to all team members. Especially the young staff.
I witness favoritism, staff turnover was high, moral low, staff training non existent . I would recommend you think twice if you want to work here, you will regret it.

It’s a great job for anyone starting, will learn a lot working here, no room for slack. Only good if in-store management know what they are doing because upper management are pushy and not supportive enough. 

Can be a fun place to be as long as jobs get done properly. But a lot of pressure and really high expectations for management from upper management with little appreciation. 

Busy periods can be intense if not use to the pressure or if management doesn’t help staff out. 

Very secure job position if permanent, with potential to grow for all staff in time. 


What is the best part of working at the company?
The managers in my store are really nice and are really welcoming. And yet again, the schedule for working is greatly flexible to my needs. Whether it be because of cadets or something personal. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Sometime’s it’s mostly customers if they’re not co-operative. But I’m mostly really patient so it helps with it and I have good calm under pressure skills in my opinion

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It is an excellent little company for a first job.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It is really slow, as any normal job but you do get to meet lots of people from serving them at the register, etc. But recovery and filling is also a fun task that happens some times

great work environment, amazing team and loyal customers. the store was recently acquired by prices plus and has been running well until recently. during christmas time we were allowed an extra staff member to help keep us running but we are no longer given that choice. with pallets coming in sometimes 3 times a week, we can’t keep up. made enquirers to area manager and were met with remarks such as “you’re not working hard enough.” customers are often left waiting as register workers have to fill shelves out of view and it’s starting to hurt the business as customers keep walking out. overall, it’s a good job with decent pay but the upper management needs to focus more on understanding the needs of each store individually.

Prices Plus is a family owned company and they are all lovely people to work with, The head office team are also extremely friendly and are always happy to help when needed. Nothing ever seems like its to hard or a hassle for them when making contact. I've had quite a long career in retail and can honestly say the entire PP team are as good as it gets.

Don't do it to your mental health. Expectations from head office are high, pay is low. Out dated procedures and equipment. Appalling work place culture. No room for progression. Worst company I have ever worked for. Care taker for 4 months whilst the store had no management. Then told when I applied for a management position I was not trained enough. Then expected to train both of the new management. Best thing I did was leave.

I hated working for prices plus. My time and effort there went un-noticed. Head office were rude and made you feel like you were not competent in anything you do and I ended up with terrible mental health and anxiety due to them. The turn around of staff there just goes to show how bad the company is and nothing was ever done about it. For a $2 store the policies they have are ridiculous. To them you are just another employee, you won’t advance in the company and they will replace you straight away if something happened to you. Think before applying for a company like this.

Such a toxic workplace!! The managers are all shady and petty, you are judged and brought down for anything you do! I was made to feel so small and dumb everyday at work by the managers, and staff are belittled on the daily. You are worked like a dog and could sacrifice your personal life for your job but receive very little thanks afterwards. The managers have their heads shoved so far up each other’s behind it’s embarrassing. They do not care about employees one bit, not even upper management!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS JOB, YOU WILL REGRET IT!!

The job was good but the work conditions werent that great. There was no aircon, and in summer, i felt like i was sweating through our thick uniforms, we were always asked to wear long black pants and to look tidy which is reasonable, but there were no fans to cool the workers down. The staff were generally pretty nice except for the rare occasion i felt a bit left out. i enjoyed serving customers and meeting new friends.
