The shifts were fairly short but taxing as you were given a set isle to maintain during your shift and there was no team spirit when staff finished there isle they and go home instead of working to the end of there shift and help others who might be behind, if working on the tills you had a much harder job as you also had a set isle to do and were required to complete this while serving customers with in your shift time which was very difficult to near impossible during busy periods. You were not properly trained you are given a lot of paperwork to read and nothing catered for health and hygiene and no training what so ever if a refrigerated product was found on the floor when cleaning, i was told to just put it back which (which i did not i throw it away in the bin) in a any work place with out knowing how long that product has been out of the refrigerator is a no no and also cleaned the floors with cold water so just shifting the dirt around the only hot water tap was in the disabled toilets or up stairs in the staff room so very difficult to carry buckets up an down the stairs, not very safe either, the shelves where over stacked as were the refrigerators which over heated often leading to a lot of product waste as things got damaged a lot. The floors safety was not a key item of repair as when i was there, there was a badly fitted floor tile with black and yellow tape around it to highlight it was unsafe, but a lot of the customers were disabled some with poor visibility thus making it very dangerous and in the month i was there nothing was done to fix it!. The management were always helpful when possible and would assist when they could but lacked the ability to properly record hours worked when one was called upon to do extra hours/ shifts, but would give you a hard time if you did not work fast enough to complete your set isle more so on those working on the tills on there own during busy periods and certainly did not encourage team work, when calling for extra help from staff/ management they often would wait for someone else to help thus delaying good customer service, but very quick to tell you off if you had not done your set isle's with in the time frame of your shift, everyone was friendly and keen to help if they could/ were allowed to, but were not encouraged in the team spirit of helping each other, the theme was to save money and cut corners instead of having common sense and forethought of a good team and of shop safety, i have heard the shop is now under new management so things might of improved since i worked there. what i did notice the staff were always friendly and fun to work with, some times even management to.

I don't know if it was just the store I worked in and the manager I had but this job - sales assistant - was absolutely terrible. The job when you apply is advertised to you like the best job ever, and I didn't even have an interview, I was just approached by the manager (whose staff turnover is outrageous) and told they had a contract for 12 hours, and as I was unemployed, I took it and wish I hadn't.

The only good parts of the job were the wages, the friends I made with ex-colleagues, and a fraction of customers. But that's it. As a student, I study full time and was expected to work as soon as I finished classes at 6pm and work til late. I worked 20+ hours in a weekend alone when I was only meant to work 10-12, and would easily finish 8pm-10pm most nights when I'd be put down for a 6pm finish. The manager locks the entrance so that staff cannot leave at their "finishing time", and I was made to finish other people's jobs as they would be sent home for no reason during the day.

If for some instance you could not attend work due to sickness or family bereavement, and especially in my case, being a student at university, you would be made to feel incredibly guilty even if it was out of your control.

Also, the manager would sometimes give you the day off, letting you know the night before via text, and then later you would find out they were actually using up your holiday days, to get around the hours model. Supervisors and Assistant Managers in my team were also made to work 12-14 hours with no days off and hardly any breaks, they would finish late around midnight/1am and then have to come in for 8am at the demand of the store manager.

I would receive texts at 11/12 at night telling me to come into open the store, when legally you're meant to get 12 hours notice at least. The last shift I did before I left, I got a text at 6am telling me to come in at 8. That was the final straw.

I hope all Poundland stores are not like this, but I would not recommend ever working for this company, no matter how brilliant it is made out to you during interview.

Management team are all bullies and treat staff like rubbish. They punish the staff for the same things they do and claim that managers are allowed. I left with crippling anxiety and depression because of this company...ran by grown man children who are power mad. They pile too much far and away pressure on staff then humiliate them when it gets too much. Shame on you Poundland

Very bad management. A lot of people leaving due to health issues. Staff under a lot of stress to perform 110% at all times. Management don't help you out with any issues. Always just looking after themselves and covering their own backs.

I enjoyed my time working within the Poundland company.
working within the company was brilliant as I learnt more experience within my time there, I also have better experience and understanding at being a sales assistant.

Opportunities to advance, e.g. from sales assistant position to supervisor position. A lot of work to be done, can be stressful but is rewarding through the skills you get such as till, customer service and merchandising experience.

I enjoyed every minute working at Poundland 
I enjoyed putting the stock out onto the shop floor.
I also enjoyed helping the customers out with what they wanted.

Brilliant place to work in. Nice busy shop that will always keep you going. Job roles were stacking shelves, serving customers on tills and merchandising the shop floor.

it is just a 16 hour contract , i need a full time job.I like to work here,but i need a job with more work to do and i want a job i can use my skills i have after nearly 20 years in customer Service.

I worked there during summer and it was fun i made some extra cash for myself but then as soon as school started i had to leave cus i got bus with schoolwork
