I was hired as an Assistant Manager in November 2019, the first few months were full on. I came in right as it was about to hit Christmas, so it was a sink or swim situation. 
I had an amazing manager, amazing area manager and amazing state manager. 

They really pushed me to just keep improving and not settling for benchmark, and it was either going to make or break me. I’m so thankful for them pushing me, because it broke me out of a retail rut I had found myself in after 12 years being in the industry. 
My area and state manager taught me so many aspects of retail that I never even thought about. How to see things differently whether it be VM, staff, or sales. I always felt so supported and could pick up the phone and just chat if I needed it. 

Fast forward to mid/late 2021 I was promoted to store manager after my manager left. They promoted me even though I was pregnant, knowing that I wouldn’t be in the position long nor would I physically be able to do tasks as quickly as I used to. 

I had to start my maternity leave early due to pregnancy issues. I have felt nothing but love, support and encouragement from all of my management team and Head office services. Throughout my entire pregnancy I cannot express the gratitude and kindness I have been shown by everyone. 

If you are willing to put in the hard yards this company will take you far & keep your best interests at heart.  



Worked at platypus for just over 3 years, I know so surprised I lasted that long.. the reason why I did stay that long was because of the team! 

I started off as a casual and then became the full-timer.
For a casual, your job is not as stressful but being a part of the management team is absolutely ridiculous. 
- The expectations they have, are shocking. 
- They do not listen to you and your store's needs. 
- You constantly get phone calls daily from area manager complaining because your store is not achieving and if you do hit target, you barely get praised. 
- Have stupidly high UPT expectations
- If you are having a slow day and theres not much foot traffic in the shopping centre they do not care and will ask you what you're going to do differently to get people in store.. (most frustrating thing when theres nothing you can do because the centres dead )
Over all such a negative place to work. I left this job to focus on my mental health and happy to say id never to back. Two good things I have to say is the team I worked with I consider really close friends now and the discount is 40%.

Management at Platypus is really great, everyone gets treated equally and fairly. Co-workers are roughly all same age and therefore everyone gets along fantastically. Typical day at work includes maintenance of the store and back room; everything is to be kept neat and tidy. Receiving stock and putting it away also consumes some of the day. Visual merchandising is really important as we need to show off what is our best sellers and to promote new styles to generate sales. But customers are the number 1 priority so everything can be paused for a short time until the customer is satisfied. The hardest part of work is having to keep up with a busy store and make sure its clean and tidy at the same time. The most enjoyable time of work is working with my co workers, everyone works as a team and we just generally create a good and positive environment in the store.

first thing work out budgets and where we are for the week /counting float,cleaning out the front floor and windows,re-merchandising if needed, sales ,sale,sales,banking,sales ,sales/customer holds and lay-bys to sort,sales ,sales,sales,restocking when needed, sales ,sales,sales..re-lacing and tidy up /vaccum,doors closed.

A typical day would be a friendly welcome by all co-workers and after signing in, I begin greeting and selling the product. Being new to the workforce my co-workers helped me with almost everything and I learned many skills quickly yet efficiently. The hardest part of the job was working almost the whole on Boxing Day, it was intense and a good challenge for me. The most enjoyable part of the job was the team and the customers, I loved meeting, bonding and working alongside my co-workers and I loved meeting and helping customers find what they needed.

I found my stay with Platypus shoes challenging, enjoyable, and most of all, pleasant. They are an extremely professional company I can recommend to anyone with a passion for sales, shoes etc. 

A typical day at work consisted of running the store, more or less. Each individual was just as valuable as the next. Hierarchy was not entirely apparent, and as such every one felt wanted. 

The hardest part of the job was most definitely leaving at the end of the day, and as such the most enjoyable part would have to be just being able to be there.

A typical day at work consisted of ensuring the store is looking at it's greatest, as after all, a great, clean looking store encourages people to come inside. Shelves would be restocked so there was to be no gaps in display, back room re-tidied, generally making sure the store could go about its day efficiently. Most enjoyable part of the job was learning how to (and perfect!) my sales skills and my approach toward a sale. I also acquired great customer service skills which I can now apply in many situations - not just within the work force.

Very disappointed to see the disgustingly poor management skills in store. I have found this company to be very dog eat dog, not caring about staff and even stealing sales to boost their own stats. Since the management are tight knit amongst themselves, there is an obvious favouritism, causing a clear divide between managers and casuals. This reduces team cohesion and as a result I do not feel like I belong in the team. Very clear that the managers are out for themselves and don’t care about who gets stepped on along the way

I've gained sales techniques that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

State and regional management were regularly onsite, providing us with constructive criticism.  

This was always a new lesson in itself, and allowed me to try new management techniques that allowed my team members to learn and share their opinions.

Loud music created a fun environment, that allowed us to have fun whilst working towards KPI's and targets.

we are pressured to do sales and hit targets, management is bad and they don't care about us and you can never move up the ladder with the company but they will do anything to keep you there even by lies. You could be the best salesperson but they would overlook your hard-work and leave you standing alone. The company over works managers. Managers have favorites in store and if you are not a favorite, you barely get shifts other than that we still have fun on the floor and sell.
